PHS Autos - Building A Library of Skills

Students are starting to creating their video library of skills using images, video, and voice over.  Essentially, students are critically thinking about the steps to accomplish a task (in this case it was a brake job), creatively thinking about the content and how they want their video to be viewed, and sharing it to the world!

We really want students to choose the tool that they want to create with based on what they think their skills.

Today, students were introduced to four tools that can help them explain the process of disassembling and assembling a small engine in Mr. Marsh's class.  The presentation included a video from the Service Director at Gandrud Automotive Group which help solidify to the students how valuable a video is in setting potential job candidates apart from others in the industry.

Copyright Free Music (SoundzAbound) To iPad

We have access to hundreds of copyright free music through SoundzAbound.  I created a Google Drive Folder with all of the files that students can easily access via their iPads.  They will choose the song they want and import it into their iMovie (see image).

Flex Mod Feature - Course Phasing

I was asked by our assistant principal to create updated videos that help others to understand the features of a flex mod schedule.  Two years ago, we created a series of videos called "40 Seconds With Flex Mod" which asked a question and got an answer.  This was created to inform students and parents while we prepared to enter the flex mod schedule which was eight months away.

We started the flex mod schedule in the fall of 2015, and we felt it was time to "tell our story" as it pertains to our unique schedule.

The process for completing the video started with filming of the three phases of the course.  I used the S1 Shoulder Pod iPhone Mount, an iPhone 6s Plus, MacBook Air, iMovie on a Mac, Canva, and YouTube.

The Process:

• Determine the meeting times of Chemistry for an entire week.  We always think of courses in weeks and how it looks.
• Capture video from Large Group on Wednesday using the S1 Shoulder Pod and iPhone
• Capture video from Small Group on Thursday using the S1 Shoulder Pod and iPhone
• Capture video from Lab on Friday using the S1 Shoulder Pod and iPhone
• Transfer video into three different folders on the MacBook Air utilizing AirDrop (amazingly fast and efficient)
• Import video into iMovie and edit
• Confirm names and spellings of students in movie via Chemistry teachers
• Create a YouTube Thumbnail in Canva
• Upload the video into YouTube (two places: PHS YouTube and my YouTube channel) and add a customized YouTube Thumbnail

Making a video takes time!  Everything does!  However, the tools are present that help the process to be efficient.  Hopefully, the final product(s) can be something that transports a viewer to the experience and walks away with a better understanding of the subject.  You owe it to your learning environment to "tell your story".  I look forward to seeing what you produce!

I would like to publicly thank Mr. Manning, PHS Media teacher, who I've had the fortunate opportunity to spend many hours creating videos so that we can tell our school's story. He has truly taught me so many video producing skills in the past five years.  I really didn't know what I didn't know!  However, that's the beautiful thing about a high school.  In a sense, it's a village or city with every profession who has a master trades(wo)man.  There is always someone who knows something about something.  And as teachers are always willing to do, they help people understand how to make, fix, or create something.

2016 Goody Traithlon

As readers of iPaddiction know, the Goody Triathlon is ONE OF THE BEST things I do during a school year!  I am blessed to use my technology talents to create and update the website.  It's amazing that four years ago we completed everything through email and snail mail.  Now, every piece of communication is through the website, Google Forms, and images/video!


I'm also able to help capture the day's accomplishments through images.  In the past, images and video of race participants and mentors were taken on an iPad, dropped to iMovie (on the iPad), and uploaded to YouTube.  All of this needs to be done between 9:30 A.M. and 1:00 P.M.  Last year, rendering the video and uploading the video was almost not accomplished.  I also wanted to have more up close and personal "smile" pictures.  I changed tactics and tools slightly.  I used a Nikon D5300 camera on loan from our Art Teacher, Mr. Sperduto.  This had a 200 zoom lens on it which allowed me to get close enough to see smiles of accomplishment.

I removed the SD card from the camera and dropped the images into iMovie on the Mac.  I had all of the title pages, bumpers, transitions, and music set so that only the images needed to be "dropped in".  I also didn't render the movie and upload it to YouTube.  I simply "played the movie" in iMovie.  This saved me a GREAT deal of time!  As you can see, over 300 people were able to view smiles and accomplishments from the day BEFORE leaving!

The Goody Triathlon is an amazing accomplishment for the participants who overcome so much to complete a triathlon!  Thanks to the technology, I was able to capture the accomplishments!

Newscast From The Past Using Green Screen by Do Ink In World History

Last year, we conducted the same learning opportunity, but some things were note perfect.

• Students didn't stand in the correct place for adequate backgrounds
• Students were expected to record and create all within the same small amount of time.
• Students were sharing 30 iPads.

This year, we are organizing it differently.

• Due to the flex mod schedule, I was able to teach the following information three times to all of our sophomore class students (about 350) in one day.
• Students viewed the Green Screen during the entire large group mod to "make it real."
• Students will sign up for a specific recording time.
• Students will only use one iPad (we've purchased more iPads).
• Students will have one one full week to create the video using the Green Screen app by Do Ink.

After producing the videos either completely in the DoInk app or in iMovie, a few of the final products were saved and can be viewed.

To practice and to show students an example, I created  a video for the iPadU Conference which I will  be speaking at in July.

Newscast From The Past - World History

As we progress forward with the project, the Green Screen App by Do Ink will be used by some students.  Below is a basic instructional video followed by a complete tutorial.  Remember, each Do Ink creation can be produced to the iPad's camera roll.  Upon completion, combining multiple Green Screen creations into an iMovie project.  Produced together can be a completed project.

After one week of three green screen set ups and 300 students experiencing the project with 30 iPads, some images, videos and final creations were completed.

iMovie: Integration Apps For The iPad

It is important to understand the tools that exist for efficient, effective, and engaging productivity by our students and staff utilizing the iPad. 

This does not dismiss the importance and necessity of Google apps or Creation apps used on the iPad, but "showing what you know" is a critical skill for students.

Age Of Reason Fantasy Draft in Social Studies

This is more than cool!


Our social studies teachers created a PRETTY cool video which introduced their "Age of Reason" content.

Mrs. Schartner, created a tremendous "digital workflow" to make this all happen!

• Used Google Draw to crop the pictures for the first and last "Draw" images. This allowed for editing of the NBA version.
• The entire group of images was placed into Google Slides on a computer.
• Screen Shots were taken of each of the slides while the Google Slides was open on an iPad.
• All images of people were saved on an iPad and everything was put into iMovie on the iPad
• The iPad was used because it had the music.  The Chicago Bulls theme song was added.
• Our football announcer, Mr. Nickerson (also a social studies teacher) was given a typed script.  His voice was recorded straight through.
• The audio of the announcer and the images was "matched up".
• Names and dates were added with the title options in iMovie
• The final product was exported to YouTube

I'm extremely proud of the workflow that Mrs. Schartner designed and implemented!

40 Seconds With Flex Mod Digital Workflow

As readers of iPaddiction know, Pulaski High School is transitioning to the flexible modular schedule so finally, "Time can serve students, instead of students serving time".  As a result, we are creating informational videos to answer questions.

WITHOUT the use of the iPad and all its apps, Google Drive and its collaboration capabilities, and the incredible creativity by our staff and students, these videos would NOT have been completed in LESS THAN 24 HOURS!

Making these videos required an efficient Digital Workflow.  The process included:

• Google form to gather questions from students after the introductory video
• Answering the questions in print form on a Google Spreadsheet
• Assigning multiple teachers to record videos via smartphones of students asking the questions 
• Uploading these videos to a Google Folder using the Google Drive app on smartphones
• Renaming the video questions by the question in the Google Drive app
• Assigning multiple teachers to record videos via smartphones of teachers answering the questions
• Importing a introduction "40 Seconds With Flex Mod" graphic created by our art teacher on an iMac in Photoshop into a single iPad using Google Drive
• Creating the original soundtrack by our band teacher using AudioTool in Chrome
• Converting the soundtrack from a MP3 file to an ACC file using Online Covert 
• Importing the soundtrack onto a single iPad using Google Drive
• Using "Open In" for all of the graphics, sound, and video into iMovie on the iPad
• A black background was placed for two seconds before and after the video to allow for the music track to work
• The audio track was cut at the time the student started asking the question and the teacher ended answering it.  The audio during the speaking was dropped to 30% of the original volume
• The video was renamed the question and produced to the camera roll.
• Google Drive allowed for all the videos to be uploaded into a shared Google Drive folder
• Our website designer placed them on our flex mod website's  FAQ page

Flex Modular Scheduling - Here We Go!

On Wednesday, our school board approved the implementation of the Flexible Modular Schedule for the 2015-2016 school.  With that, let the planning begin!  We will be meeting in a few short weeks to develop a plan for the upcoming school year.  This plan will focus on ALL the items that need to be completed prior to the schedule impacting our staff and students in August of 2015.

I had the fortunate opportunity of presenting in Westside School District in Omaha.  While it was great for me to give information to teachers and administrators in Westside, it was EQUALLY advantageous for me to receive a tour of their high school and to have a twenty minute conversation with staff and administration on how they conduct their modular schedule in a high school of 1800 students.  They have implemented the Modular Schedule since 1967.

I have compiled a video of the tour of the school.  I used an iPad Air and iMovie on the iPad to edit the movie.  I also used my iPhone and the included Voice Memos app to record the principal and assistant principal providing valuable, candid statements and advice.  I used Garage Band to clean up the audio (we were in a noisy area).  Exporting the "podcast" to my iMac and uploading to Google Drive worked great to get the information to others.

Creating a public Google Drive Folder compiles the recordings into a very presentable format.

I am proud of our high school and our district!  This isn't going to be easy, however, nothing great every is!

iPad and iMovie Brings Smiles On Fishing Trip

Two years ago, Mr. Goodness, Pulaski High School physical education teacher, was given an iPad.  He admittedly had no idea how or why he would use it.  However, after numerous conversations with me he started using Coach My Video to help students obtain physical education goals.  The entire process has moved him to use video to demonstrate learning via goals set for each student.  These videos are displayed during parent-student-teacher conferences and parents love them!  The entire learning process for him has developed into a great working relationship between the two of us!

He now takes his iPad everywhere!

On a recent trip, he captured so many precious moments that tears developed while I watched this video.  These students are truly blessed to have Mr. Goodness working with them.  Fortunately, we are able to experience his great work through the lens of an iPad.

n2y Winner, Mrs. Morgan!

Technology can present itself in so many ways.  n2y and Symbolstix is a technology tool that has revolutionized Mrs. Morgan's classroom learning environment.

In September 2013, Mrs. Morgan approached me with the idea of entering the n2y contest in which n2y wanted to hear how the Unique Learning System was utilized in classrooms across the United States.  After understanding the task at hand which was filming and producing a video telling the story of how the Unique Learning System has helped Nalia become verbally engaged in learning, I agreed to help.

Part of the job of a Learning Support Teacher & Technology Integration Specialist is thinking about and enacting the best work flow for a task.  My initial thought was to use iPads and Skitch to tell the story.  However, I knew I needed to talk with Mr. Manning, a media teacher.  He immediately recognized the importance of the story and decided to become an integral piece to the puzzle.  From him, I learned how to transcribe each video clip (we used Google Docs so that both of us could work on the document).  Transcribing allowed us to tell the story through the teacher, students, and parents.  Our final product was well received!

The reaction of Mrs. Morgan and her students is priceless.  Congratulations, Mrs. Morgan!  You deserve it!

iMovie On iPad - Adding Subtitles

Ms. Slusarek, high school Spanish teacher, wanted to have students add one word subtitles to highlight the specific chapter vocabulary that they use throughout the iMovie production.  They need twenty subtitles that will help check for correct spelling, contextual use, as well as, aids in audience comprehension.

I knew that text could be attached to video or images in iMovie on the iPad.  The key to making this work is to splice the video between phrases on the video storyboard.  When no transitions exist, there is a seamless transition between video clips that is NOT noticed by the viewer. The image below shows this.

I chose to use the Title > Middle option to make it look like a subtitle.  Overall, I believe this can be a great feature for students to create written word along with audio words.

Impact On Students:
Citizenship: I view this slightly differently in this situation.  Providing written words for students who may have hearing challenges is only fitting.  If the activity allows for students to understand the text better, great!  However, providing equal accessibility for all is fantastic!
Critical Thinking: Hearing the spoken word and translating it into written word takes a great deal of concentration.

4th Annual Goody Triathlon

It's that time of year again!

Mr. Goodness, physical education teacher, organizes a 10K triathlon for special needs students throughout our area.  Over 150 students participated by swimming, biking, and running 6.2 miles!

It is my role to video the entire event and have a highlight video ready to view after lunch.  I use the iPad and iMovie as it is the EASIEST method for creating a video in such a short turn around!  After the race ends, the video needs to be ready in 30 minutes.  Not a problem with iMovie on the iPad!

I love this day, because students ALWAYS succeed when they think they can't.  Much of that is because of our many high school and middle school students and teachers who volunteer their time for encouragement!

Teacher Sub Plans For Substitute Teacher Via iPad and YouTube

Because of our "Digital Alternatives To Written Lesson Plans" Lunch N' Learn, Mrs. McCumber created a 3:34 video detailing the day.  She created video clips of resources and classroom layout.  She inserted and edited the videos in iMovie on the iPad.  A key addition was the title clips of text for each class during the video.

As the substitute teacher stated to Mrs. McCumber, "It was great; no teacher has ever done that for me before".

I believe creating digital sub plans is an efficient method for the classroom teacher who can provide a visual insight into their classroom for the sub.

Splicing iMovie and Exporting To Explain Everything

Our seventh grade science teacher, Mrs. Schwittay, is asking students to "Show What They Know".  She is asking students to create a Rube Goldberg experiment.  Instead of having every group present them one at a time in front of the class, students will be using their iPads to record the creation and hopeful success of their invention.

Students will be using the iMovie to splice the entire experiment into portions so as to describe the different science applications.

Once the iMovie has sliced the video, students will export the entire video and portions of it into Explain Everything.  EE will be used for explaining verbally the questions they asked and the information they learned.

Impact On Students:
Collaboration: Working on the Rube Goldberg process will take serious collaboration.  As far as technology use, the students will need to decide as a group what parts of the video and explanation that applies to the video needs to be recorded.
Critical Thinking:  Smashing two apps together takes critical thinking.  Remember the definition of critical thinking? Critical thinking is a process that leads to skills that can be learned, mastered and used. Determining the process of bringing the movie into iMovie, splicing, producing, and inserting takes a thorough thought process.
Creativity: Not only will students need to develop the Rube Goldberg path, but producing an Explain Everything creation could take on a form of humor, fun, light hearted, serious, or determined tone.

G Drive (Green) App For Downloading Video From Google Drive To iMovie

Saving video to an iPad from Google Drive was not possible until I found a solution courtesy of one of our IT people, @kenwestphal.

Collaborating with multiple students on different iPads or taking video with an iPhone or iPod was a difficult task because the Google Drive app only allowed downloading of images for use in iMovie.  Using the G Drive (Green) app now allows for videos to be imported into iMovie once the video is uploaded to a student's or teacher's Google Drive account.

If students are recording video using an Android device, the video will need to be converted before G Drive will import it into iMovie on the iPad.  We use Any Video Converter.

Basic Anatomy Students Helping Patients

Last year, Mr. Anderson embarked on a problem-based learning opportunity for his Anatomy students.

This year, Mr. Anderson invited my to his classroom for the final days of the learning environment.  Students were introduced to a patient.  That patient was shown an informational iMovie describing the body part that was being affected.  The iPad provided a great conversation starter between the patient and the students. Within that movie, students provided factual information along with specific footage of the students describing the body parts functions. (Special thanks to Mr. Gosse for being a patient)

Impact On Students:
Collaboration: Students worked in partners to develop an information iMovie that would provide patients with some of the knowledge they needed to understand what was ailing them.
Creativity: Students need to use a multi-media approach complete with audio, video, and still images to convey information in a clear and concise manner.
Critical Thinking: Students experienced a wealthy of information and placing the correct information into the video was vital.  In addition, students needed to transfer the knowledge they had of the body parts to the patient while having a conversation.  It wasn't all about the technology.  Students needed to critically think about the most important information and provide that to the patient.
