Google Docs, Slides, Sheets Templates Workflow on iPads

The Google Docs, Slides, and Sheets apps provides some great TEMPLATES for students to create something that will "show what they know".  All of the screenshots in the presentation below are from the iPad app.  While this was the workflow I used for Lunch N' Learn, all of the same template options are found on a computer.

The presentation above was created on Keynote on my iPad.  I "made a copy" of it and sent it to my Google Drive.  If you are desiring students to make Keynote presentations, this is the workflow to get the presentation to a teacher.  As blogged about earlier, I really like Keynote on my iPad while presenting.

IMPORTANT: Teachers must have students turn in any assignment in Canvas that requires a Google Doc, Slide, or Sheet to be submitted as a "File Upload" through Safari and not simply a "Website URL".  See poster below.

Explore - Design Suggestions In Google Docs, Slides, and Sheets

Google Docs, Slides, and Sheets used to have a "research" area on each file to help with finding information while creating.  Google has changed that to "Explore".

All of the features are available on a computer or Chromebook.  Unfortunately, they are not available on an iPad at this time.  However, many educators continue to create lesson content on a laptop or computer, and these features may come in handy.

Images and Captions Using Google Drawing in Google Docs on iPad or Computer

Our students have conducted interviews with people in their families.  To enhance the papers that have been written, students will insert images with captions utilizing Google Drawing.

Google Docs Expiration Date Option

When clicking on the advanced feature section of a Google Docs blue sharing button, you will notice an option to have an expiration date set for each collaborator.

Once the clock is clicked, time options are available.

Now, create the expiration date and forget about it.  After the expiration date, people who have access will no longer be able to view, edit, or comment depending on the permissions you granted.

We are in the middle of a project in Spanish II.

We are going to create a children's book using Explain Everything.


We wanted to have students write the text dialogue of the book in Google Docs so that it can be in a "story format".  We believe this will give the students a better visual flow of how the story will develop.  We will then "copy and paste" the text into Explain Everything.

Flex Mod Yearly Planning Schedule (2015-2016)

Planning phases for courses in a flex mod schedule requires thinking that our teachers have not experienced. Mrs. Van Gheem-Rottier and Mrs. Titler collaborated to produce a yearly planner that could be used by teachers and teams of teachers to organize the upcoming year.

Because a Google Doc was used, teachers can collaborate at their own time and in their own place ideas pertaining to their class.  If a printed copy is desired for a collaboration time, that can be accommodated as well.

Our sixth grade students in Mrs. Noble's class are writing creative stories that create "critters" that combine two different features of different animals into one "critter".  One of our teachers wanted their students to create an image of the "critter". Google Draw was the best tool for this on a computer.

If you are considering using Google Classroom or are a current user, connecting Doctopus and Goobric would be an excellent efficiency tool.

If you use a rubric to grade student work, Doctopus and Goobric will allow for an assessor to place a rubric directly on a digital document.

2014 Midwest Google Summit Day 1 Resources and Reflection

The 2014 Midwest Google Summit began today as a two day learning opportunity for educators.  Teachers were focused on integrating Google Apps for Education by certified Google Teachers.  My notes were taken with the Paper 53 app which allows for tremendous creation opportunities.  I used the #Sketchnote option to produce ideas.  I chose this method because all of the resources that presenters create are online.  I wanted to create the notes so that they make sense in a visual way.  Below are the highlights of my learning day complete with visual Sketchnotes and written information.

Google Drive and Docs on the iPad

Part 1 of 2: View Part 2
The Google Drive app and the Google Docs app enhances communication, collaboration, creation, and critical thinking while using the iPad.

A number of features of the Google Drive App for the iPad include:

• A transportation device for photos, videos, projects (from different apps)
• Ability to share any item in the Google Drive with others using and email address  
• Searching for your documents can occur with a few key words
• Storage of PDF documents for easy reading

In two minutes you can learn about Google Drive on the iPad.

Google has incorporated additional apps Docs, Sheets, and Slides into the iPad app system.  These apps act as NEW TABS and allow you to create and edit files in each of these apps.

Today, we will focus on Docs.

The Docs app allows users to create, edit, and collaborate on a single document.  Comments can also be inserted on documents for collaboration purposes.

If you have a Google Document on an iPad and it has a table in it, there is a quick way to edit this on an iPad.  If you see a triangle with an exclamation mark, follow a few steps to edit it.

Many items that pertain to content area, classroom management, and personal computing can be found in the Google Template Gallery.  People around our school district and the world can submit "documents for use" so that students or teachers can use them in their classrooms.

The Google Template Gallery is not automatically in your Google Drive.  You will need to restore the gallery into your drive.

Having students or teachers submit documents/forms/sheets/presentations to the gallery can provide some great resources for YOU to use.

Mr. Barszcz, English teacher, created a Sub Plan Template that could be used by any teacher for any subject.  Consider using it.

Mrs. Moehr, FACS teacher, created a grocery order form that can be used during each project.  No need to recreate.  An "automatically created" new document is created for you.

Mrs. Forsberg, middle school teacher, created a paragraph/essay planning template.  When students "use this template" a new copy will be created for the students.

Google "Save As A Doc"
Through this blog post, I was provided a solution to a problem that has perplexed our teachers who use forms for some time.  When lengthy questions are entered into a Google form, it is challenging to read in the "sheets" format.  Finding the "Save As A Doc" add-on, places all chosen cells of data from a sheet into a document which is easy to read.

Mr. Ken Westphal, technical support, provided our staff with excellent directions that explains why/how a Google doc, spreadsheet, or presentation can be edited on the iPad.  Remember, the Google Drive app (video is from 2012; some slight current differences) now does not allow for editing one of these three items...

• If users want to Edit a Google Doc, they'll now need the Google Docs iPad app - see here

Auto-Expire Usage Rights For Google Documents

Sharing Google Documents has truly revolutionized collaboration and "turning in" of assignments in the classroom.  Unfortunately, at the end of each year, teachers have an enormous amount of "shared with me" documents in their Google Drive.  Last year, I shared a "cleaning your Google drive" blog post that was helpful for teachers.  It works, but teachers still need to take time to "clean" their drives.

With Auto Expire (original directions), students could add this scrip to their document so that their document would leave the teacher's "shared" storage area after a certain amount of time.  It make take one or two attempts, but once the process is mastered, this could truly help teachers with workflow efficiency.  On the flip side, teachers can run this auto expire with ANY document that they share with students.  This can help with students leaving a class and not having access to a document after a certain time period.

Steps:

• Create a Google Document, Presentation, or Sheets (this can also be used for ANYTHING in stored in a person's Google Drive - essentially, anything with a link)
• Share the item with whomever you would like
• Copy the shared link
• Click Here to obtain a copy of the "Auto Expire" Script Worth Using
• File > Make A Copy > Save With Title You Want
• Add the URL of your Google drive document OR file in Line #3 and the expiration date in Line #7 (Use YYYY-MM-DD:MM format)( must be military time)(HIGHLIGHTED IN YELLOW)
• Ctrl +A --highlights everything on Auto Expire Script Worth Using
• Ctrl + C --copies everything
• Travel Back to Google Document (Slides, Sheets)
• Click Tools
• Run Script Editor
• Click Blank Project
• Delete small amount of text that is in the script editor
• Ctrl + V (paste)
• Click Black Triangle
• Save Script
• Click Black Triangle Again
• Click Accept
• Click Run Start

I realize it may be slightly confusing, however, ask for help if you need assistance.  Once completed people will notice that the Google Document that you shared with them WILL DISAPPEAR from their "shared with me" folder automatically after a certain time!

Saturday found four teachers from Pulaski attending a very well run edCamp.  I attended three group learning sessions and one individual learning session.

Prior to the edCamp Milwaukee beginning, connecting and reconnecting with extraordinary educators is the name of the game.  I talked with people I knew

These people were just some of the people added to my PLN.  

Before an edCamp starts, sessions of learning need to be suggested.  A 2014 schedule needs to be built! I suggested "This Works For Me!" A #friendlysmackdown among technology integrators and tech coaches as to what awesome strategies are used to move the first year or 35th year teacher forward in effeciently integrating technology in the classroom.

My Session 4:  Individual Learning Opportunity

My #MVP - Most Valuable Point

During my session 2, I met Tim Morten, tech integrator in the Sun Prairie School District.  Session 2 created a positive experience for him as he wears many hats in his district.  I really enjoyed talking with him and discovered that he could use my Top Tech Tool infographic.  Once I shared that with him, he shared a Google form that he is using when designing lessons with teachers.  He made the Google form create a Google Document that is complete with information that allows for easy understanding of the lesson and its objectives.  (I will let Tim share it out when he is ready)  I will use it as it is awesome!

edCampMKE was a fantastic day of learning for me!  I loved learning something new and immersing myself with powerful educators who are chaning the world!

Experiencing Chromebooks As A Student

Mrs. Uelmen, our Director of Instructional Technology, presented at the Green Bay Google Summit.  She included staff as students in the discovery of Green Bay, Wisconsin.  As you will see, collaboration, Google Documents, searching, creativity, and movement are all in a day's work for teachers.

I documented the hour lesson to showcase how teachers can realistically understand how the implementation of Chromebooks is significantly different than the sit and get, lecture style of learning.

Google Doc For Question & Answer During Active Research

Mr. Landers and Mrs. Koller are allowing their students to develop action research pertaining to energy uses and misuses in our school.  I like how they created a collaborative Google Doc to facilitate questions and answers that they have of the student and the students have for them.

Impact On Students:
Collaboration: With only two teachers in classes of 25-30 students, conversations can't always happen. This document allows students and teachers to work through questions and answers relatively quickly.
