I've blogged about Workflow before, but until Apple made it free last week, I didn't really feel it was a tool that others would pay $2.99 for.  Why?  Because it takes a little bit to understand it.

Basics Repeated input actions on your iPhone or iPad create desired output actions.

Since it is now free, I encourage educators to look at it and discover ways to utilize it in their personal or professional life.

After taking five screenshots with my iPad based on the digital workflow of utilizing the "Open In" feature that I used, I utilized the Workflow App and the process of a screenshot how-to workflow. Once I completed the workflow, I exported the product into Notability.  Notability helped me add text and additional direction lines.

The finished product was then exported into Google Drive for sharing!

Google Docs, Slides, Sheets Templates Workflow on iPads

The Google Docs, Slides, and Sheets apps provides some great TEMPLATES for students to create something that will "show what they know".  All of the screenshots in the presentation below are from the iPad app.  While this was the workflow I used for Lunch N' Learn, all of the same template options are found on a computer.

The presentation above was created on Keynote on my iPad.  I "made a copy" of it and sent it to my Google Drive.  If you are desiring students to make Keynote presentations, this is the workflow to get the presentation to a teacher.  As blogged about earlier, I really like Keynote on my iPad while presenting.

IMPORTANT: Teachers must have students turn in any assignment in Canvas that requires a Google Doc, Slide, or Sheet to be submitted as a "File Upload" through Safari and not simply a "Website URL".  See poster below.

800 Staff & Students Contributing To Community Service Movie

We needed a workflow for staff and students to contribute photos and movies taken during our Community Service.  Last year we had everyone email the images to us and then we sorted them out We made this video.

This year we are more organized with Google Drive Folders.
Here is our process:


I also created a GIF so that students can see how to "add the folder" to their Drive.  This GIF was created with my ever increasingly favorite app, Workflow.  You can get the workflow here and add it to your collections of Workflows.

While making the movie in iMovie, it's very helpful to have the "activity feed" up on the screen.  It notifies us of changes to the folder.

Digital Story Project: Spanish II using Explain Everything as a Template

In collaborating with the Spanish II team of Mrs. Van Gheem-Rottier, Ms. Sampson, and Ms. Slasarek, we developed a digital workflow in which students will be creating written stories based on a template created in Explain Everything.

This stemmed from the template that Mrs. Vertz created.  She wanted students to focus the majority of their time on working through the process and not creating all of the pieces needed in the process.

Explain Everything's "export a project" option allows for "guided creativity" from teacher to student.

In this project, Spanish II students will be showcasing their creativity and language using the Spanish language by creating a digital legend.  Their goal is to use the "preterite and imperfect tense" to create a story about the characters, setting, and plot of their choice.  Only text will be used - no audio.

The template that students will "open in" Explain Everything on their iPad has been exported as a project from Explain Everything to Google Drive by the instructors.  Our teachers utilize Canvas to disseminate resources.

SimpleMind and Notability to "Show What You Know" for Three Branches of Government

To allow students to "Show What They Know" in seventh grade, Mrs. Burch provided students with an introduction to the SimpleMind app and smashed it with Notability.  Google Drive and Canvas were used to finalize the workflow of product to instructor.

The SimpleMind app is a tremendous app that serves as a "graphic organizer" with multiple options for colors.  This was the best app for creating a web graphic so students could describe the Three Branches of Government.

We found that when we smashed the SimpleMind app into Notability the students were able to include images of topics described in the SimpleMind app.  Students were also able to add hand written annotations using tools in the Notability app.

As students took more than one day, we were able to export the Notability and SimpleMind creations to students' Google Drives via the app.  This allowed for students TO NOT need to same iPad each day of creation as the Notability app allows for importing of content from Google Drive.

As part of the assessment, Mrs. Burch chose the creativity portion of the four c's standards to assess along with the content.

From a tech coaching aspect, I (the tech coach) taught the the features of the app and the workflow needed completely to the first group of students.  During the second group of students, Mrs. Burch taught the features and workflow, while I was in the class for support.  It was a great interaction between Mrs. Burch as she was able to teach almost all aspects of the project while asking a few questions of me in front of the students if needed.  For the remaining two classes I was not in the room, but followed up with an email to see how the day progressed.

Overall, Mrs. Burch and myself believe the process worked well.

Digital Workflow in High School Photography

It took some time, but we were able to determine a "turn in" folder for our photography students that meets all the criteria for efficient digital workflow.  We are using iMacs and Google Drive.  Some items that needed to be considered

• Teacher able to view all pictures from students
• Students not able to view other student pictures online
• Method for students KNOWING the teacher received their picture
• Assignment organization
• Student organization
• Class organization

Age Of Reason Fantasy Draft in Social Studies

This is more than cool!


Our social studies teachers created a PRETTY cool video which introduced their "Age of Reason" content.

Mrs. Schartner, created a tremendous "digital workflow" to make this all happen!

• Used Google Draw to crop the pictures for the first and last "Draw" images. This allowed for editing of the NBA version.
• The entire group of images was placed into Google Slides on a computer.
• Screen Shots were taken of each of the slides while the Google Slides was open on an iPad.
• All images of people were saved on an iPad and everything was put into iMovie on the iPad
• The iPad was used because it had the music.  The Chicago Bulls theme song was added.
• Our football announcer, Mr. Nickerson (also a social studies teacher) was given a typed script.  His voice was recorded straight through.
• The audio of the announcer and the images was "matched up".
• Names and dates were added with the title options in iMovie
• The final product was exported to YouTube

I'm extremely proud of the workflow that Mrs. Schartner designed and implemented!

Twitter Notifications To Control Words That Are Viewed

Pulaski Community School District has focused to promote the great things happening in our district through Twitter.  As of Tuesday, November 15, Twitter is providing a mute button for users to essentially "block" any words from their Twitter feed.  Below is the workflow for students and adults to control what they see.  This workflow is based on using a computer.  The app that I have on my iPad doesn't have these features as of right now.  A student or teacher may be able to travel to Safari and log into Twitter from there.  The features may be present.

If it doesn't appear today, Twitter will continue to roll out this feature in the coming weeks.

iPhone Photos to Google Plus Album to Google Site

The workflow for getting a slide show from an iPhone to a Google Site might be easier, but this is the process that our AP Biology teacher and I came up with.  The bottom line is that she wants to showcase many things they are doing in the class.  A Google Plus slideshow is the easiest way to embed this in a Google Site.

iPad and IEPs Workflow For Documenting Student Successes

Yesterday, Kare Goodness, our high school adaptive physical education teacher, and I presented at the Wisconsin State technology in special education conference.  What started two years ago with a conversation has now developed into a tremendous workflow that has created positive relationships between parents and our school and an accurate account of students meeting IEP goals through video evidence.



While this is for physical education, it truly could be for many items.  Reading fluency, demonstrating proper emotions, math facts, standards based grading, and much more.

Adobe Spark Pages In Criminal Justice

For a few years, our Criminal Justice students used Thinglink to create interactive posters that explained different types of hate crimes.  The final product was good, but the workflow wasn't as easy as it could be on an iPad.

Enter Adobe Spark Pages.

Mr. Pirman stated that this year the workflow was so much smoother.  Students created Adobe Spark Pages creations and shared the links via Canvas (our Learning Management System)

Raider Strong Podcast: Workflow That Makes It Happen

I finally understood and completed the entire workflow for creating and producing a podcast to iTunes!

I made the intro and exit music in Garage Band on the iPad. (Starter Book) I made the art work in Canva on the iPad.  I recorded the actual interview on the iPad.  I uploaded it to Google Drive where it can be produced into an MP3 on the iPad.

Here's where the entire process on the iPad could stop and people could listen to it via the Google Drive Folder.

However, that's not officially podcasting.  I needed to get it to a host, I chose Soundcloud for now as it allows three hours of free hosting.  See the product.  After that, I connected with iTunes Connect. This is the official "housing" area of all iTunes podcast accounts.  I used my iTunes account, completed all of the information, and waited 24 hours for Apple to approve.  Now, you can find my podcasts on iTunes OFFICIALLY!   

UPDATE:  Once the Soundcloud app is installed, use the Garage Band's "sharrow" to produce the podcast directly to Soundcloud.  No computer needed.

MY GOAL: Interview as many Raider Strong employees as possible which will help promote the GREAT people that work in our district. 

RELATING TO STUDENTS' LEARNING EXPERIENCE:

After conferences with Ms. Thut, we created the beginnings of how it looks for students.  Our students will focus on:

• Consuming quality content using Environmental podcasts found on iTunes
• Critically think about what makes an exemplary podcast both from a technical stand point and content stand point.
• Collaborate with experts on YouTube or in the community to develop a passion for an environmental issue that is important to them. 
• Create a series of three podcasts that directly relate to the environmental issue that they want others to know about.

While all of the creation can and will be done on an iPad.  Our students will spend time in the library downloading their podcast from Google Drive and then back up to Soundcloud. We will also use their Pulaski iTunes account to establish an official Podcast account.

I'm thrilled at the final results and can't wait for our students to experience the thrill of podcasting!

World History Twitter Template

Students will be creating three tweets on behalf of a famous person in history.  While we could be "real tweeters", some students do not have a Twitter account.  Because of this we modified a Twitter template that we found online for our purposes.

Students will create a copy of the template using an iPad which has a specific workflow.  Find the specific presentations below.

We feel that this learning opportunity helps students to practice being great communicators, critically thinkers all while creating good content.

iPad Challenges and Solutions We Experienced and Solved

Implementing 2,000 iPads within a two week period into our district has been organized and successful!  However, we have experienced a recurring theme of four challenges that we solve in minutes.  I wanted to share the workflow for staff and students in today's Lunch N' Learn to reduce down time by our students.

I created the screenshots via an iPad and created the presentation in Keynote.  I exported the Keynote from the iPad to Google Drive in various formats.

I've stated before that Keynote is a great presentation tool while demonstrating workflow on the iPad. I use AirServer and with that I am able to quickly jump back and forth from the Keynote presentation to demonstrations on the iPad

Some people may not have Keynote to view the presentation.  Through my iPad, I exported the Keynote as a PDF into Google Drive.  I then made the settings "anyone with a link can view"

Finally, I wanted the visual on my blog, so I exported the Keynote as a Powerpoint via my iPad and uploaded that file to Google Drive where it converted.  View that below.

40 Seconds With Flex Mod Digital Workflow

As readers of iPaddiction know, Pulaski High School is transitioning to the flexible modular schedule so finally, "Time can serve students, instead of students serving time".  As a result, we are creating informational videos to answer questions.

WITHOUT the use of the iPad and all its apps, Google Drive and its collaboration capabilities, and the incredible creativity by our staff and students, these videos would NOT have been completed in LESS THAN 24 HOURS!

Making these videos required an efficient Digital Workflow.  The process included:

• Google form to gather questions from students after the introductory video
• Answering the questions in print form on a Google Spreadsheet
• Assigning multiple teachers to record videos via smartphones of students asking the questions 
• Uploading these videos to a Google Folder using the Google Drive app on smartphones
• Renaming the video questions by the question in the Google Drive app
• Assigning multiple teachers to record videos via smartphones of teachers answering the questions
• Importing a introduction "40 Seconds With Flex Mod" graphic created by our art teacher on an iMac in Photoshop into a single iPad using Google Drive
• Creating the original soundtrack by our band teacher using AudioTool in Chrome
• Converting the soundtrack from a MP3 file to an ACC file using Online Covert 
• Importing the soundtrack onto a single iPad using Google Drive
• Using "Open In" for all of the graphics, sound, and video into iMovie on the iPad
• A black background was placed for two seconds before and after the video to allow for the music track to work
• The audio track was cut at the time the student started asking the question and the teacher ended answering it.  The audio during the speaking was dropped to 30% of the original volume
• The video was renamed the question and produced to the camera roll.
• Google Drive allowed for all the videos to be uploaded into a shared Google Drive folder
• Our website designer placed them on our flex mod website's  FAQ page

Book Creator Exporting Options Using Google Drive

Our sixth grade teacher, Mr. Pratt, a model classroom teacher in our district will be utilizing the Book Creator app for an upcoming creative learning opportunity for his students.  As always, it is important to develop/create/understand the work flow of completed project to a sharable format.

To understand the workflow I created a Stick Around App book using the Book Creator app.


On Monday, November 25, 2013, I blogged about illustrating a Book On an iPad or Online and the Book Creator App for the iPad was a choice.  Since then, I haven't revisited the app.

Today, I created a book about the Stick Around App in high school Anatomy and pushed the three different types of final products to Google Drive.  These final products are placed in a shared folder.  Students and teachers can "open in" the file from Google Drive to iBooks or any other application.  Of course, this is an app smash.

This tremendous App Smashing presentation from Miami Vice helped in the process.

In this episode, Mr. Aaron Sperduto kicks off the new Raider Strong Podcasts as the first host.  Mr. Sperduto impacts our school by not only teaching a wide variety of art mediums, drawing, painting, pottery, and photography, he also serves as the yearbook advisory.

In addition, Mr. Sperduto is our head boys and girls tennis coach.

Mr. Sperduto is passionate about working with kids and realizes that teaching is a natural fit for him.  When he is not in school, you will find him outside enjoying hunting, snowmobiling and anything to do with nature.

Lunch N' Learn: PODCASTS: Consuming To Creating and How to Get There

Because of a recent conversation with our AP Environmental Science teacher, I determined an iPad only workflow for consuming podcasts and creating content through a podcast.  Some may say that "we don't have time for that".  While time needs to managed appropriately, this is a great tool for reflection on content or passions that are present in the content area.  In addition, this could be a "quarter project" ideas as once the process is taught for the first time, students will be able to create the podcast(s) on their own and publish.

This really doesn't need to be an hour production.  Three to ten minutes with one or no guests can really spark creativity, thinking and discussion.
