8 Deadly Sins of Camerawork When Using an iPad

Our high school physical education students will be creating energetic lifting videos.  We will be teaching them how to film correctly when using an iPad.

After each "deadly sin" was introduced, students partnered with another student and practiced how to properly film based on each of the "sins".

I liked how students saw what was an incorrect/correct skill and then practiced the skill correctly.

I also believe this was an outstanding example of how iPads are so portable and function in so many ways.  If we had Chromebooks in our school as our one to one device, this would not have been as efficient as the "all in one" iPad.  You'll also see a great example of team teaching and the very best thing I like about my job.  After the introduction to the learning opportunity, I presented the tech skills that students will be using.  To complete the introduction, the physical education teacher, Ms. Retzlaff, provided the specific requirements and expectations.

The teacher is the facilitator of the content.
The digital learning specialist (me) is the facilitator of the tech tools & skills associated with content.

Freshmen Physical Education Creation Tools

Throughout the week, all freshmen students experienced learning opportunities pertaining to creation tools.  Civics and English 9 instructors wanted students to create or publish so we gave them tools to choose.

The tools for physical education were different.  See the presentation below.

Podcast: Play in new window  |  SubscribeiTunes

In this episode, Mr. Kare Goodness, District Adaptive Physical Education Teacher, tells us that he has known since 7th grade that he wanted to be a teacher.

As with many of our district employees, the people are the best part about working in the Pulaski Community School District. So much so that he doesn't want to do any other job!

When he's not in school, Kare is hanging out with his kids in the outdoors.  Someday, you'll see him in Alaska!

Raider Strong Episode 016: Liz Retzlaff [Podcast]

Podcast: Play in new window  |  SubscribeiTunes

In this episode, Ms. Liz Retzlaff, High School Physical Education teacher, explains how a summer "tennis coach" job at age 24 helped her realize teaching was her calling.

She loves how everyone "lives in kindness" in the Pulaski Community School District.  She would love to create a new "job" as camp coach!  Hear her explain her idea.

When she's not in school, she lives the "cross fit" life.  She would like to travel to Australia to "cross off a bucket list item".

Adobe Spark Pages as a "Get To Know Me" Activity in Health Class

Mrs. Moseng learned about Adobe Spark Pages during a recent Lunch N' Learn.  She decided to use the iPad app, Adobe Spark Pages, as the tool for the students to create something that would help Mrs. Moseng know more about the students.

Book Creator App on iPad Export as Movie and eBook

Book Creator App on the iPad which we have used since 2014, will be our creation tool of choice to create both videos and eBooks for "7 Minute Workouts" developed by students.  We chose the app because it can be published as an interactive eBook (suitable for the iBook app), a PDF, or a movie.  All of this can be sent to our Google Drive for sharing!  We also wanted the ability to have words, images, drawing, and embedded video.  Lastly, we wanted to try a different creation tool.  Readers of iPaddiction know that Explain Everything is a go to app, because it's that good!  We'll allow students to use this app to broaden their creativity toolbox.

The Movie

The ePub Book that can be opened in iBooks. At this time, we are not sending books to iTunes so the iBooks are not interactive.

The PDF book that can be opened anywhere. Video examples of exercises won't work.

During the day, I team taught with Mrs. Logue and Mr. Karcz.  I taught two of the classes while Mrs. Logue observed.

During the third class, Mrs. Logue taught the entire technology piece.  I supported her a few times during her presentation.  However, she did a great job of teaching with confidence.  This was a perfect demonstration of the gradual release teaching strategy.

Goose Chase - Scavenger Hunt For The Masses

Update - Bottom of Post!

Goosechase.com is a fantastic tool that works on mobile devices (iOS or Android) and on computers.  Combine collaboration, creativity, and critical thinking into one "mission" learning experience.

While Goosechase allows for a "recreational" free option, it is intended for only friends and family. To Goosechase's credit, they understand school budgets are tight.  They have provided a "request for classroom license" option which allows K-12 or College/University students to use one game per request.  Requests are unlimited and does provide a way for educators to use the tremendous tools of Goosechase without purchasing anything.  Please note, that the request needs to be made in advance.  Allow for plenty of time before the game is played.

*Note: We are finding that emails get mailed quicker if a game does not have a password.  I suggest that you send the email a day or at least a night prior to the learning lesson.
*Since we are not one to one, we are asking our students to get the app on their phones.  No one has objected yet.

iPad and IEPs Workflow For Documenting Student Successes

Yesterday, Kare Goodness, our high school adaptive physical education teacher, and I presented at the Wisconsin State technology in special education conference.  What started two years ago with a conversation has now developed into a tremendous workflow that has created positive relationships between parents and our school and an accurate account of students meeting IEP goals through video evidence.

While this is for physical education, it truly could be for many items.  Reading fluency, demonstrating proper emotions, math facts, standards based grading, and much more.

*Due to privacy of students, some of the documents are unviewable in the presentation.

iPad and iMovie Brings Smiles On Fishing Trip

Two years ago, Mr. Goodness, Pulaski High School physical education teacher, was given an iPad.  He admittedly had no idea how or why he would use it.  However, after numerous conversations with me he started using Coach My Video to help students obtain physical education goals.  The entire process has moved him to use video to demonstrate learning via goals set for each student.  These videos are displayed during parent-student-teacher conferences and parents love them!  The entire learning process for him has developed into a great working relationship between the two of us!

He now takes his iPad everywhere!

On a recent trip, he captured so many precious moments that tears developed while I watched this video.  These students are truly blessed to have Mr. Goodness working with them.  Fortunately, we are able to experience his great work through the lens of an iPad.

Google Presentations For Student "Life Choices" Choose Your Own Adventure

This was truly a collaborative effort between staff members in our district.

Last April, Mrs. Hocking asked me how to digitize a "choose your adventure" experience with sixth graders. After it was a great success, I blogged about it.  Some time later, Ms. Barszcz inquired to me about resources for a "life choices" experience that our middle school physical education/health teachers wanted our students to experience.  I immediately thought of the "choose your own adventure" experience with Google Presentations.

It has taken a great deal of planning by Ms. Barszcz, but the final products are outstanding!
*Material may be sensitive, but is in our health curriculum.

It Ain't About The Device, It's The Impact That It Has

Coach My Video has so many options for physical education class. Last January, Mr. Goodness made the jump into using Coach My Video to aide in the student's understanding of a concept that was being taught. The iPad video and the drawing tools provide instant feedback to the student as to what they can improve so as to accomplish a task.

While this is great, the purpose for this blog post is the following email received yesterday from Mr. Goodness.

Clay,
I just had an amazing session with a student.  I was using the CMV app
with a student to help illustrate what he was doing and then used the
drawing tool to show what to change.  He got it!!  The best part was
that we sat down together and he was able to communicate to me via
drawing on the iPad what form was better and why.  It gave me
goosebumps.
Have a great day,
Kare

Using technology is tremendous if it's used beyond "this app is cool".  In the above situation, the student couldn't visualize what they were doing.  However, with the use of a portable tablet (iPad) the student was able to instantly visualize what was being performed correctly and what needed to be fixed.  The inspirational part was that they student and teacher were able to communicate via the drawing tools from Coach My Video.

Techcoach's need to continue to know that what they are doing is for a purpose.  The purpose is to implement the correct tool at the correct time for the correct reason.  This truly points our focus to the SAMR model.

I am so blessed to work with teachers who understand it isn't about the coolness of the tool, it's about how the tool impacts a student's life.

Google Drive App and Google Spreadsheet To Document IEP Standard Progress

Mr. Goodness continues to utilize seamless integration with his iPad, the Google Drive app, and a Google Spreadsheet on his computer to document student progress.  View how the organization is allowing him to know the specific accomplishments and areas of work for each student.  In addition, all of this information is at his fingertips for parent viewing during IEP meetings.

Awesome!
