Google Keep on the iPad (or Anywhere)
Google Keep is another option in your Self Service store for staff and students to organize all types of notes. It is also an alternative to Evernote which seems to be slowing down and becoming less user friendly. It is a simpler option than Notability, but the features are worth "noting". See what I did there? Of course, you did!

Notability For (Track) Coaches
As Notability has been taught to our teachers and utilized by our students, educators are getting more comfortable.
Today, Mr. Jeff Braun came into my office with enthusiasm and stated how he used Notability at a track and field clinic over the weekend. He said, "When the clinic showed the PDF version of the clinic notes, I said 'Hey, I could put that into Notability!'"
He shared with me his clinic notes. The presenters notes are completely annotated with Coach Braun's notes!
Success! For the coach and for the athlete!

Notability To Assess Biology Slides
Today I team taught with Ms. Thut. The Biology team, Mr. Anderson, Ms. Thut, and Mrs. Vertz, created the lab and the slides of an onion that students were to analyze. In the past, students would look through a microscope and then recreate the drawings of what was viewed.
With this learning opportunity, teachers took pictures of onions under a slide and provided them to students via a Notability note creation. In this way, teachers are able to see students analyzing the slides via "mark ups" in Notability. Students will return the lab via Canvas to the teachers.
I was able to support Ms. Thut while we helped students get set up for the first time.

Notability Student User Guide Complete With Entertaining Clips To Stay Focused
As we progress through using iPads, Notability is a must have app for students! I used the Notability app to create a High School Student User Guide and a Middle School Student User Guide.
I was also given the task of creating a video tutorial for our high school homeroom within a flex mod schedule day. There are certainly hundreds of tutorials out their, but I felt it was important to capture all of the features of Notability while maintaining the interest of fifteen to eighteen year old students.
I used Camtasia for the screencasting and Canva for the video thumbnail. Truthfully, this project has used about 10 hours of my time to create. Was it worth it? I hope that it keeps the attention of the students and teaches valuable skills to be a successful Notability user.

Utilizing Open In - Workflow & Notability Apps Made It Happen
After taking five screenshots with my iPad based on the digital workflow of utilizing the "Open In" feature that I used, I utilized the Workflow App and the process of a screenshot how-to workflow. Once I completed the workflow, I exported the product into Notability. Notability helped me add text and additional direction lines.
The finished product was then exported into Google Drive for sharing!
Two apps made my life easier:

The Sharrow
Today's lunch n' learn focused teachers attention on "The Sharrow".
![]() |
| Made With Canva.com |
The Sharrow is iOS's gateway to collaboration and creativity. Every app that has options to connect with other apps can easily make it happen by finding the sharrow.
We looked at how PDFs are going to be placed into the best digital note taking app, Notability and other productivity and creativity apps.
We also reviewed the options for images including the positives and negatives of students having access to AirDrop.
Positives: Collaborating on research with images, pdfs, and websites. With the collaboration of items, students could then create their own "show what they know" item based on the research of many.
Negatives: We realize that students could snap pictures or share completed PDFs via AirDrop. This will provide us great opportunity to discuss digital citizenship.
Remembering the "Sharrow" and it's many ways that it opens the door to productivity can enhance the educational experience.

SimpleMind and Notability to "Show What You Know" for Three Branches of Government
To allow students to "Show What They Know" in seventh grade, Mrs. Burch provided students with an introduction to the SimpleMind app and smashed it with Notability. Google Drive and Canvas were used to finalize the workflow of product to instructor.
The SimpleMind app is a tremendous app that serves as a "graphic organizer" with multiple options for colors. This was the best app for creating a web graphic so students could describe the Three Branches of Government.
We found that when we smashed the SimpleMind app into Notability the students were able to include images of topics described in the SimpleMind app. Students were also able to add hand written annotations using tools in the Notability app.
As students took more than one day, we were able to export the Notability and SimpleMind creations to students' Google Drives via the app. This allowed for students TO NOT need to same iPad each day of creation as the Notability app allows for importing of content from Google Drive.
As part of the assessment, Mrs. Burch chose the creativity portion of the four c's standards to assess along with the content.
From a tech coaching aspect, I (the tech coach) taught the the features of the app and the workflow needed completely to the first group of students. During the second group of students, Mrs. Burch taught the features and workflow, while I was in the class for support. It was a great interaction between Mrs. Burch as she was able to teach almost all aspects of the project while asking a few questions of me in front of the students if needed. For the remaining two classes I was not in the room, but followed up with an email to see how the day progressed.
Overall, Mrs. Burch and myself believe the process worked well.

iPad As A Research Tool
A teacher recently asked me, "How should I best use the iPad as a research tool with students?'
Some suggestions:
Effective Research:
Flipboard: Get The App
Some suggestions:
Effective Research:
- Share effective researching strategies
- Use this resource
Flipboard: Get The App
- After understanding effective researching strategies, I would absolutely download the Flipboard app and create an account. Searching any topic in Flipboard will provide digital magazines for the students to follow. I would also have the students create a magazine that they would "flip" potential resources into as students are researching.
- Flipboard in Global Issues Class (Slides 10-12)
- If account is created on an iPad, the same account can be used on a smartphone or on the computer by downloading the app or using Flipboard.com
Notability: Get The App
- Once resources are found in Flipboard or using a "Google Search", Notability becomes the one stop shop for "housing" all of the information.
- Full-featured handwriting
- Advanced word processing
- Media insertions of images, web resources, audio notes

Notability: Integration Apps For The iPad
It is important to understand the tools that exist for efficient, effective, and engaging productivity by our students and staff utilizing the iPad.
This does not dismiss the importance and necessity of Google apps or Creation apps used on the iPad, but note taking is a critical skill that students need to have.
Starting now, a four part series of Integrating Apps for the iPad will be our Lunch N' Learn's focus.
Four Apps. True Productivity.
Week 1: Notability
Week 2: Recordium
Week 3: Explain Everything
Week 4: iMovie
Define: Integrat(ion)
Notability iPad App $2.99, Mac App $4.99
Notability For iPad: Much More Than A Note Taking App, includes many features that help students efficiently take notes and complete assigned writing tasks.
I utilized a number of Notability features in the screen shots and videos below.
Specifics include:
Watch how students use Notability for creating Cornell Notes.

- Audio recording linked to notes
- Media insertion of photographs, web clips, figures, drawings.
- Class, Subject, Content organized by color
- Integration with MANY other apps
- Cloud storage
In addition to this, the integration with OTHER apps are numerous. As the picture on the right demonstrates. Often used apps such as Google Drive are easily integrated.
Handwritten notes, typed words, diagrams, web pages are all incredible features that can be utilized with Notability.
In addition, anything on the note can be cut and moved to any other place on the note.
With the drop down menu, any one of five media options can be included in a note. This could be a tremendous way for students to prove what they are writing about by providing resources.
Students can also write on and return any worksheet that a teacher may create.
