An update occurred for an app that we use in English, Social Studies and other content areas.

As students or staff enter their Flipboard on a computer, Smartphone, or tablet (iPad coming soon), they will notice a few differences.

Flipboard Magazine Resource For Journal Reflections in Communication in Writing

In the past, one printed article was handed to the students for a "response journal" in Communication in Writing class.  Students read the exact, single article that was given to them from the teacher.  Reflect and apply it to their life and the assignment was complete.

With the implementation of Flipboard we accomplished two objects:

1.  Introduce students to a tool (Flipboard) that can provide quality written and visual resources to get them interested in topics they love.
2.  Create a quality magazine developed by the teachers that centers on  articles based on Communicating in the Workplace.

Introducing Flipboard reminds of the times in elementary school that we

used Play-Doh.  The teacher always let us "create whatever we wanted" for about 10-15 minutes and then it was time to develop a clear product based on teacher direction.  The way Flipboard sets up their "Get Started" page on a mobile device sucks users in because the students get to choose the topics they love.  As soon as they are done choosing topics based on their interests, Flipboard immediately populates riveting articles and resources to view and read.

Even the most reluctant students get sucked into the greatness of Flipboard.

Global Issues Using Flipboard with Criteria and Implementation

Completed setting up Flipboard magazines with students this morning.  Mrs. Brylski set parameters for the entire semester. (See board picture) We also made students create a title, share the magazines with Mrs. Brylski so she could follow them and comment, and set their "cover page".

Today we presented the tremendous Flipboard resource utilizing an iPad or student's personal mobile devices.

The presentation described in detail how Flipboard works for personal and educational learning experiences.  In addition, we set up the parameters for the semester long project that can be found on slide 23.


After demonstrating to students the features and power of Flipboard, students were given time to investigate personal interests from football to hunting to politics.

Students commented on a regular basis, "This is so cool!"

Combine the coolness with one of our core objectives, productivity, for any tool that we use and, it was a tremendous learning experience for our students!

Flipboard Use In Global Issues Garners Attention From Flipboard and Co-Founders

We've used Flipboard in our Global Issues Class with great student engagement.

Enter the power of a global audience:
On March 5, I tweeted and mentioned the Flipboard company about an article that our student led newspaper, Pulaski News, wrote about!

I'm truly thrilled for Mikayla Berg, the author of the article.  After showing the original tweet, she noticed the Flipboard tweet.  Needless to say, it made her day!  After all, Flipboard has 446,000 followers!

Without the positive power of technology, authors in schools and in our community would not have a global voice!

Truly, an incredible experience for one of our students!

Global Issues: Flipboard for Current Events Finalized With a TED Talk

Our Global Issues class with Mrs. Schartner began a journey at the beginning of the year to learn more about current events.  Mrs. Schartner and I discussed the power of current events using the iPad and decided to utilize Flipboard.

Throughout the semester students discovered issues through articles and reflected on them.  The iPad and the Flipboard app was an amazing tool to engage students with global issues that they may not otherwise be interested in.  I personally use Flipboard for gathering technology news related to education and have created three of my favorite magazines.  

Students also watched numerous TED Talks on Global Issues throughout the semester similar to the one below. 

Fast forward to the end of the semester and students combined two global issues articles they found through the Flipboard app and created their own personal TED Talk.

iPad As A Research Tool

A teacher recently asked me, "How should I best use the iPad as a research tool with students?'

Some suggestions:

Effective Research:

• Share effective researching strategies
• Use this resource

Flipboard: Get The App

• After understanding effective researching strategies, I would absolutely  download the Flipboard app and create an account.  Searching any topic in Flipboard will provide digital magazines for the students to follow.  I would also have the students create a magazine that they would "flip" potential resources into as students are researching.
• Flipboard in Global Issues Class (Slides 10-12)
• If account is created on an iPad, the same account can be used on a smartphone or on the computer by downloading the app or using Flipboard.com

Notability: Get The App

• Once resources are found in Flipboard or using a "Google Search", Notability becomes the one stop shop for "housing" all of the information.
• Full-featured handwriting
• Advanced word processing
• Media insertions of images, web resources, audio notes
• VIEW DETAILS

Exporting:

• Notability fully exports as a complete file or pdf to the Canvas app

I've been flipping and reading and reading and flipping magazines using Flipboard for a couple of years.  In the spring of 2015, I taught our teachers about Flipboard.  Three magazines have become front runners as resources for me and other educators.

Our high school is truly innovating with a "Flex Mod" schedule in 2015-2016. Students will have more flexibility and responsibility to harness their educational time in high school.  This magazine contains all resources that can help with any aspect pertaining to the flex mod schedule.

Whether on the iPad, iPhone, or using a computer, Flipboard has become and incredible learning and teaching tool.

Educators Guide To Flipboard In The Classroom

Flipboard is a tremendous web, iPhone, iPad digital magazine for many educational purposes.  Subscribing or following the "best of the web" informational material can be a resource for staff and students.

The graphics are stunning.  Images are crystal clear, and the pages turn with ease and quickness.  News can be aggregated from websites, news sources, blogs, Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, and many others.

Once topics are followed, a user can create their own magazines which can be a "storage area" for specific readable items.  These magazines could be followed and read by others.

We introduced Flipboard as a tool for acquiring current events.
