Padlet Used For Presentations and Discussion

Padlet is not a new tool, however, I utilized it as a new tool to present.  I did not have any formal "presentation", instead I utilized the wall feature of Padlet to create options for session two teachers of my Resonate: Making Better Presentations.  Session One was all about emphasizing visual and delivery of presentations.  After learning about these keys, teachers spent one month creating and revising better presentations.

Session Two was about choice, sharing an old presentation, sharing a new presentation, and then providing words of wisdom.  The first three choice columns contained resources that were text, video, and images.  Teachers liked and/or commented on the resource.  Teachers then uploaded images or complete presentations that were "bad" and then presentations that were "good".  They discussed the negatives and positives of each of their presentations.  Finally, teachers were able to provide "words of wisdom" for anyone making presentations based on what they learned in the two hour session.

Padlet allowed me to do all of that with it's collaborative features!  Link to Padlet
*Scroll right, left, up or down on the green Padlet below to view all content.
*Once class was over, I changed the permissions so that the Padlet was "read only".

Using an LMS in Flex Mod

We believe at Pulaski High School that a Flex Mod schedule is the best schedule for students.  In the last two weeks we have had Liberal High School in Kansas and SPASH in Stevens Point visit us to see how our schedule works.

We are in year three and believe and LMS (learning management system) is essential for students and staff to maximize classroom and personal learning time (PLT) for a positive learning experience.

Below is the presentation that outlines some major ways we utilize our lms, Canvas.  No matter what lms is used, a "one stop shop" for course resources is essential for success.

I created the presentation in Keynote and exported it to YouTube.

The Minutes Leading Up To A Presentation

Presenting in front of four year old students or forty year old adults isn't always easy (however, it is fun!).  I've presented in front of many people, and I am a firm believer that music makes things better! Last night, prior to the presentation Experts At Your Fingertips, music was playing.

In 2008, I started "Fun Music Friday".  Music was played while students walked into the classroom in the morning.  It was amazing to see the positive attitudes that transcended because students heard uplifting music.  Dancing even started!  What a great way to start the day!

Below are nine songs that say,

  • Welcome
  • Hello
  • Get Ready, 'Cause This Is Going To Be Awesome
  • Just Try Not To Be In a Positive Mood

I do not have the videos playing for people to see.  The presentation that will about to happen is in one tab and the music is in a hidden tab.  YouTube continues to be a great tool to get free music and playlists are an easy organizational tool.

If you are presenting or getting in front of people to speak, consider the playlist and get your presentation off to a rocking start!

Adobe Slate on iPad Featuring The Flex Mod Schedule

This morning on Twitter, I discovered a presentation given at #NETA16 using Adobe Slate.  I liked the flow of the presentation as it resembled an elegant website.

I downloaded the free iPad app and embarked on creating my story.  I chose to highlight the unique features of the flex mod schedule in our high school. You can see the embedded presentation below or view it as its own webpage.
Click on the image below to view the Adobe Presentation.

I liked that an account needed to be created as it allows for individual creation on an iPad or on the web using a different device.

The user interface was self explanatory on the iPad.  The "+" sign is the key.  Multiple items can be added:

  • Photos
  • Text
  • Links
  • Videos
  • Photo Grids
  • Glideshows
Along with that many options for finding photos exists, including the iPad or Google Photos.

Adobe continues to produce and distribute some pretty incredible creation products for the iPad!  I'll add this to Adobe Draw and have one more option for students and teachers to use while presenting engaging information.

All About Your Image

It's A PNG Created with Canva.com
Since using Adobe's Dreamweaver, Fireworks, and Flash to create websites in 2008, I've wondered what the difference is between

TODAY! People use images ALL THE TIME!  Because the amount of images created, used, downloaded and emailed using tools such as Google Draw, Canva, Skitch, Explain Everything, PicCollage, iMovie, a person should really know the difference so that the correct image can be used at the correct time!

Finally, some clarification!

My Gains From Not Attending ISTE 2014

I've always wanted to attend ISTE Conferences!  I never have due to a variety of reasons.  In the past, I've followed the conference via social network on a hit or miss basis.  However, this year, I focused on growing my Personal Learning Network (PLN) by viewing the #ISTE2014 Twitter stream.  I wanted to add new people that represented a variety of educational backgrounds.  From national speakers to elementary teachers and from Australia to my home state, Wisconsin I truly found amazing educational leaders that I didn't even know existed prior to this week!

And so I took this to heart!

Please view these ISTE Conference contributors through my Haiku Deck.  I took screen shots using my iPad, edited them through the camera roll, and then added them to my Haiku Deck.  Haiku Deck is an amazing simplistic, elegant presentation tool.  The most impressive part of Haiku Deck is that the user experience is the same whether it is on the iPad or on a Chromebook/computer!  Perfect for students who start content creation at school on a school technology device and complete it at home on a personal device!

While this is not an all inclusive list, these are great educators added to my PLN creating important gains for me without attending ISTE 2014!

Telling Spanish Stories With Haiku Deck

Our high school Spanish teachers were looking to integrate a technology tool that would enable the students to explain their Spanish story in an innovative way.

Haiku Deck was chose so that students could use either Chromebooks or iPads while at home or in school.  Having the same user experience on any device at home or in school propels Haiku Deck to the front for creating presentations.

While I don't know Spanish, I do know that the stunning images along with one sentence provides a clear story.

As one Spanish teacher, Mrs. Tewes, stated, "Students enjoyed using visuals to help tell their stories."

Movenote To Invite Teachers For E-Mentoring Program

MOVENOTE UPDATE: A Google Extension (app) is available.

Our middle school counselor, Nicole Gerth, wanted a tool that would provide information and a personal touch when inviting staff to become involved in our E-Mentoring program.  In the past an email was sent out with a presentation.  With the inclusion of a recorded video and the presentation, a personal touch was provided!

Consider using Movenote for your next Screen Cast.

Movenote: Send video with Gmail

Impact On Students:
Creativity:  Students can create written scripts which would force them to limit the words on the slide and increase the context of spoken word.  The creativity can also be encouraged through the video shot that would take place and the visualization of the presentation.
Citizenship: As Movenote would like to be interactive, replies are available.  Students need to focus on constructive replies that will be available on the world wide web forever.
Critical Thinking: Students and staff need to concentrate on the flow of the presenation and the words that correspond with the presentation.  Many times we hear people say, "I know what I am doing, but I just don't know how to explain it."  Critical thinking skills are need to explain the information.

Lunch N' Learn: Rethinking Slides

Today's Lunch N' Learn focused on how to rethink SMARTboard slides and PowerPoint Slides.  Last week, we looked at how to rethink slides that are in front of students.  This week, two teachers have graciously provided one SMARTboard document and one PowerPoint presentation that we take a look.  Our goal is to rethink how the slides and presentation may appear.

PowerPoint:
Allows for Presenter View that looks like this:
What Your Audience Sees

What The Presenter Sees

SMARTboard:
  • Write on Smartboard slide normally by extending the page
    • In summary, use the camera to take a picture of parts of the written text
    • These pictures will be placed on new slides
  • Write new steps on new slides
  • Extend the slide but provide a single line on the white canvas

Lunch N' Learn: Rethinking Presentations

With the dissolving of SlideRocket, it is a great time to rethink how classroom content presentations are created.  More importantly, how do a teacher's presentations move the audience (students) to truly provide that "WAIT! WHAT?" (Meyer, 2013) thought!

Notes are included with this presentation.  To enable them, click on the gears and open in speaker notes.

Large Group Instruction Area Digital Set Up Instructions Using Haiku Deck

Providing instructions to staff on how to complete digital products or processes is a major aspect of a #techcoach s job.  Our school recently updated the digital (computer/DVD/VCR) projection options in two of our Large Group Instruction (LGI) areas.

Haiku Deck became the go-to tool as it limits the words placed on a "slide" and the pictures are stunning.  Along with the Haiku Deck app, I incorporated the Skitch app as it allowed for new pictures to be enhanced by "notice markers", text, and arrows.

The finished product sent to staff is below...

Haiku Deck Video Tutorial

I have offered Haiku Deck as a fantastic presentation tool for the iPad many times.
Our high school Chemistry teacher wanted a tool for an AP Chemistry Final Project to take pictures of the equipment/chemicals throughout the steps of the demonstration so a viewer could easily see and read the vital parts of the process.

Haiku Deck will be the perfect tool for this.

View the video tutorial of how to use Haiku Deck below...

Haiku Deck For Paint Chip Poetry

Ever since our Lunch N' Learn topic was discussed using Haiku Deck in November 2012, many teachers and students have used the powerful presentation tool to create stunning pieces of information.

Today, one of our English teachers, Ms. Tubbs, created two Haiku Decks that provide insight into how students interpret poetry.  Students grabbed a color of paint and wrote the poem.

Fantastic!
