iPad Challenges and Solutions We Experienced and Solved

Implementing 2,000 iPads within a two week period into our district has been organized and successful!  However, we have experienced a recurring theme of four challenges that we solve in minutes.  I wanted to share the workflow for staff and students in today's Lunch N' Learn to reduce down time by our students.

Challenges and Solutions

  • Connecting to the WiFi (Slide 2)
  • Email Set Up (Slide 18)
  • Printing From An iPad (Slide 23)
  • Self Service App Not Working (Slide 43)

I created the screenshots via an iPad and created the presentation in Keynote.  I exported the Keynote from the iPad to Google Drive in various formats.

I've stated before that Keynote is a great presentation tool while demonstrating workflow on the iPad. I use AirServer and with that I am able to quickly jump back and forth from the Keynote presentation to demonstrations on the iPad
Download the Keynote

Some people may not have Keynote to view the presentation.  Through my iPad, I exported the Keynote as a PDF into Google Drive.  I then made the settings "anyone with a link can view"
View in PDF

Finally, I wanted the visual on my blog, so I exported the Keynote as a Powerpoint via my iPad and uploaded that file to Google Drive where it converted.  View that below.

Google Sign Out From Anywhere

Process:
  • Sign into Gmail from any computer
  • Scroll down to the bottom of all your mail
  • Click Details (small, on lower right)
  • Sign Out All Other Sessions

Impact On Students:
Citizenship:  Students and staff need to be diligent in protecting their digital reputation and representation on the web.  Logging out is probably the one thing that students forget to do on a regular basis.  Continue to encourage students and staff to be diligent in protecting their digital citizenship.

IFTTT Recipe For Weekly Staff Email

Our specialist PBIS recorder, Mrs. Mittag, has been trying to send emails once a week to seventeen other teachers.  She tries to send the email at the same time every week, but with hectic schedules it may not always happen.

Enter IFTTT (If This Then That)

We have used IFTTT for emails to text.  IFTTT can work for so many things, see explanation!

Semester Exam Study Tools

Last year, I provided a long list of study exam tools that teachers could present to students to prepare for for semester exam.  This year during Lunch N' Learn, I am focusing on three tools that, in my opinion, are the best of the list.

Impact On Students:
Semester exams are a debatable topic.  Whether your school or individual teachers administers them is not something I want to debate.  However, if the exams exist, lets help students study by offering them quality tools.
Collaboration:  All of the tools can provide collaboration opportunities.  Thinking, processing, questioning together can help remember concepts.
Critical Thinking: Once concepts are presented to students through one of these tools, students can critically determine the right area to obtain the answer and decipher the best answer to remember for the exam.

IFTTT-Trigger: Email From Teacher; Action: SMS To Student

Our calculus teacher was tutoring a student on a Friday.  He forgot to mention a crucial part of the solution. He emailed the student the critical part to the solution.  On Monday, he asked the student, "Did you get me email?"  The student replied,

"No, I never check my school email!"

Solution: Create a trigger and action using IFTTT.  IFTTT is so simple, a teacher almost can't afford to not offer it to their students.

Great thing about this was that I created the trigger and action on my iPhone in front of the teacher.  He sent me an email and the text showed up on my iPhone.  Demonstrating how it worked so quickly was a selling point!

GET THE EXTENSION

Attachments For Gmail is a great way to quickly get a visual of what type of attachment is connected to Gmail.  I used the Google Translate option for creating a different introduction.  Consider getting this extension to help make sorting through Gmail easier.

GMAIL Canned Responses

So many staff members need to reply to so many emails.  In order to become more efficient with Gmail communication, canned responses may be of some help.  Ideas for using canned responses:
  • A final "If I can be of any further assistance, please let me know." at the end of emails.
  • For librarians, "The book you requested is in and available for pick up."
  • For teachers to parents, "Thank you for your support in educating your child."
  • For administrators to teachers, "I appreciate how you..." of course the ending would be specfic
The possibilities are endless and can be learned about...In 20 Seconds.

First, make sure you enable the canned responses in the Gmail settings.

Second, create your canned responses.
