Using an LMS in Flex Mod

We believe at Pulaski High School that a Flex Mod schedule is the best schedule for students.  In the last two weeks we have had Liberal High School in Kansas and SPASH in Stevens Point visit us to see how our schedule works.

We are in year three and believe and LMS (learning management system) is essential for students and staff to maximize classroom and personal learning time (PLT) for a positive learning experience.

Below is the presentation that outlines some major ways we utilize our lms, Canvas.  No matter what lms is used, a "one stop shop" for course resources is essential for success.

We use Canvas from Instructure.  Making sure a student sees the correct courses.

CANVA: World History Russian Revolution Controlled Twitter Project

It's the 100th anniversary of the Russian Revolution.

We want students to Tweet as if they were in the midst of the Revolution, but not all students have a Twitter account.

We decided to utilize Canva's Twitter Post Templates so that students can tweet by creating a graphic.  We are introducing the project by including a great resource from RT
Not only are the tweeting, but they have a very interactive website!

Our students utilize iPads as one of their educational tools.  I created a six minute tutorial for the teachers to display during several sections of classes at the same time.



Once students have completed their three twitter graphics, they will submit all three images through CanvasLMS.  Teachers will be able to use Speedgrader to view all images at one time.

Canva For Creation, Canvas Discussion For Distribution and Reflection

Today was the submission and reflection in Mrs. Moseng's  High School Health Class for the Cancer Information and Encouragement Project.

Students used the Canva app on their iPads and Canvas Discussions for learning from others and reflection.  The directions for students are below.

AirServer Provides Dual Screens For Production Efficiency

Teaching the final production steps from Explain Everything to publishing on Canvas was quite simple with AirServer.

Dual views allowed for the steps of exporting the video in Explain Everything and the uploading of the videos to Canvas to be displayed at the same time.

Some conversation topics arose while teaching over four lunches.

• Have students take the tests while in Safari on an iPad
• "Moderate This Quiz" - Click Student Name - View Log (provides an in depth documentation of exactly what the student did during every second of the quiz.
• Teachers are telling students exactly what they can see based on their activity.  This is helping to reduce the fear of "cheating" while taking a digital assessment.
• If choosing "Shuffle Answers" and having one of the options as "All of the Above", the statement needs to change to something similar to "All of the Answers"

Digital Learning Day Resources For Teachers To Use Within Canvas

On Tuesday, March 1, 2016, all Juniors will be taking the Wisconsin state-wide ACT assessment at Pulaski High School.  All Freshman, Sophomores, and Seniors will have a Digital Learning Day.  We've informed parents that students may stay home and complete "Tuesday Only" material via Canvas or come to school and use a "PLT" resource area to complete the day's learning opportunities set forth by the teachers.

While worksheets, lectures, and digital links can be connected quite easily to Canvas, the Discussion Tool and Edpuzzle will provide opportunities to truly engage students during this time.

• Provide a link to a reading via URL or PDF and pose writing prompts and questions
• Students will not see other student responses until they post their ideas
• Require students to reply to a certain number of students
• Grading the initial responses and replies to students is accomplished using SpeedGrader
• Provide an image or video for watching and required response
• Post a file of any type

Utilizing Canvas' Peer Review Option

In creative writing, Mr. Krause and Ms. Tubbs utilized the "peer review" feature in Canvas.
Positives:

• Automatically assigns a peer to review the paper
• In Speedgrader, the instructor can see both the original paper, and the peer review

Challenges:

• When using Google Docs, students must have viewing rights of their paper open so that the peer can review it.
• The questions to guide the peer reviewer on not able to be placed in Canvas.  We wrote them on the board.
