Raider Strong Episode 001: Aaron Sperduto [Podcast]

In this episode, Mr. Aaron Sperduto kicks off the new Raider Strong Podcasts as the first host.  Mr. Sperduto impacts our school by not only teaching a wide variety of art mediums, drawing, painting, pottery, and photography, he also serves as the yearbook advisory.

In addition, Mr. Sperduto is our head boys and girls tennis coach.

Mr. Sperduto is passionate about working with kids and realizes that teaching is a natural fit for him.  When he is not in school, you will find him outside enjoying hunting, snowmobiling and anything to do with nature.

Why Are We Creating Podcasts?
Our AP Environmental Science teacher will be listening to and creating podcasts in May 2017 based on an item of interest.  I needed to understand the workflow and found a purpose: introducing our great staff to the world! Discover the details!

Raider Strong Podcast: Workflow That Makes It Happen

I finally understood and completed the entire workflow for creating and producing a podcast to iTunes!

I made the intro and exit music in Garage Band on the iPad. (Starter Book) I made the art work in Canva on the iPad.  I recorded the actual interview on the iPad.  I uploaded it to Google Drive where it can be produced into an MP3 on the iPad.

Here's where the entire process on the iPad could stop and people could listen to it via the Google Drive Folder.

However, that's not officially podcasting.  I needed to get it to a host, I chose Soundcloud for now as it allows three hours of free hosting.  See the product.  After that, I connected with iTunes Connect. This is the official "housing" area of all iTunes podcast accounts.  I used my iTunes account, completed all of the information, and waited 24 hours for Apple to approve.  Now, you can find my podcasts on iTunes OFFICIALLY!   

UPDATE:  Once the Soundcloud app is installed, use the Garage Band's "sharrow" to produce the podcast directly to Soundcloud.  No computer needed.

MY GOAL: Interview as many Raider Strong employees as possible which will help promote the GREAT people that work in our district. 

RELATING TO STUDENTS' LEARNING EXPERIENCE:

After conferences with Ms. Thut, we created the beginnings of how it looks for students.  Our students will focus on:

• Consuming quality content using Environmental podcasts found on iTunes
• Critically think about what makes an exemplary podcast both from a technical stand point and content stand point.
• Collaborate with experts on YouTube or in the community to develop a passion for an environmental issue that is important to them. 
• Create a series of three podcasts that directly relate to the environmental issue that they want others to know about.

While all of the creation can and will be done on an iPad.  Our students will spend time in the library downloading their podcast from Google Drive and then back up to Soundcloud. We will also use their Pulaski iTunes account to establish an official Podcast account.

I'm thrilled at the final results and can't wait for our students to experience the thrill of podcasting!

UPDATE: [June 2, 2017] Students really did a great job, and had fun doing it! They created unique "entry music" to their podcasts along with rich content.

One of Three Things Happens To All Educational Information Acquired In A Learning Environment

Lately, I've added a few more podcasts to my learning network.  Because of this, "The Sport of Business", especially episode 49, has provided me with some thinking material.

Matt Scanlon, Business Mentor and owner/operator of CrossFit Memorial Hill in Kansas City, MO recently stated in a podcast that three things happen to businesses.

• The Business Closes (goes out of business)
• The Business is Sold (or acquired)
• The Business Gets Passed On To Someone Else (as a legacy business)

Over the last week, I have been team teaching with Mr. Todd Rodal, allowing students to learn, comprehend, and present information based on four groups.  Students need to meet the objectives, but have choice in how they learn the information and in how they present the information.

Because of my recent team teaching experience and "The Sport of Business" podcast, I have added important information to designing lessons.  Of course, collaboration, critical thinking, communication, and creativity are always prevalent while designing learning opportunities.  However, combining that with one of three things that happens to all educational information acquired in a learning environment may drive designing a lesson to new levels.

• Students Disregard Content Closing It Out Of Their Brain
• Students Ask More Questions To Dig Deeper Into A Concept
• Students Pass On The "Amazing" Information That They Learned To Someone Else

Think about that!

Students take the information and disregard it!  They can't see how it relates to ANYTHING in their life.  To a greater degree, they start asking questions, because they are somewhat engaged and intrigued by the information that they would like to know more about it!  Finally, the information is so amazing, the students have asked so many questions to know more about it and feel motivated, compelled even, to tell someone else about how great the information is so that the information can be utilized by other people in a positive way.

The next time it's "lesson design" time, consider how the "three things that happen to all educational information acquired" will influence the educational experience for students.

I've listened to many podcasts and all of them are so well done.  Some of my favorites are

So many educators who have tried podcasting say, "Just do it!" So, I did.  It's nothing fancy, and if I continue with podcasting I'm sure I'll get better.

• Voice Memo app on my iPhone to record
• AirDrop to my MacBook Air 
• Import into blank Garage Band project
• Edit audio by replacing quiet time during original recording
• Share Export Song To Disk as MP3
• Use Soundcloud because I have an account and still have free minutes available
• Create Podcast image in Keynote
• Embed in iPaddiction

It's not as official as MANY podcasts out there.  It's not on iTunes.  However, it is a recording of a great teacher's story.

So many teachers have stories and so many people don't get the chance to hear them!

I'll try to make the stories available for people to listen to!

Podcasts For Learning

Because of my recent dedication to using Podcasts To Learn about a wide variety of items, today's Lunch N' Learn is all about Podcasts.  Podcasts are NOT new, but in preparation for today's learning opportunity with teachers, many teachers don't know how podcasts work, where to get podcasts, or how to distribute them to the students.

What's made podcasts better for me in recent weeks, is the need to NOT download podcasts but to simply stream them via a computer or mobile device.  This allows for "what do I want to listen to today" to occur when the time is available.
