Eight Deadly Sins of Camerawork (With An iPad)

With an iPad, video taping is a snap.  However, remembering effective tips can make a person's final product better than ever!

In seventh grade, I will be presenting the information below to students who are embarking on a project.

40 Seconds With Flex Mod Digital Workflow

As readers of iPaddiction know, Pulaski High School is transitioning to the flexible modular schedule so finally, "Time can serve students, instead of students serving time".  As a result, we are creating informational videos to answer questions.

WITHOUT the use of the iPad and all its apps, Google Drive and its collaboration capabilities, and the incredible creativity by our staff and students, these videos would NOT have been completed in LESS THAN 24 HOURS!

Making these videos required an efficient Digital Workflow.  The process included:

• Google form to gather questions from students after the introductory video
• Answering the questions in print form on a Google Spreadsheet
• Assigning multiple teachers to record videos via smartphones of students asking the questions 
• Uploading these videos to a Google Folder using the Google Drive app on smartphones
• Renaming the video questions by the question in the Google Drive app
• Assigning multiple teachers to record videos via smartphones of teachers answering the questions
• Importing a introduction "40 Seconds With Flex Mod" graphic created by our art teacher on an iMac in Photoshop into a single iPad using Google Drive
• Creating the original soundtrack by our band teacher using AudioTool in Chrome
• Converting the soundtrack from a MP3 file to an ACC file using Online Covert 
• Importing the soundtrack onto a single iPad using Google Drive
• Using "Open In" for all of the graphics, sound, and video into iMovie on the iPad
• A black background was placed for two seconds before and after the video to allow for the music track to work
• The audio track was cut at the time the student started asking the question and the teacher ended answering it.  The audio during the speaking was dropped to 30% of the original volume
• The video was renamed the question and produced to the camera roll.
• Google Drive allowed for all the videos to be uploaded into a shared Google Drive folder
• Our website designer placed them on our flex mod website's  FAQ page

iPad and iMovie Brings Smiles On Fishing Trip

Two years ago, Mr. Goodness, Pulaski High School physical education teacher, was given an iPad.  He admittedly had no idea how or why he would use it.  However, after numerous conversations with me he started using Coach My Video to help students obtain physical education goals.  The entire process has moved him to use video to demonstrate learning via goals set for each student.  These videos are displayed during parent-student-teacher conferences and parents love them!  The entire learning process for him has developed into a great working relationship between the two of us!

He now takes his iPad everywhere!

On a recent trip, he captured so many precious moments that tears developed while I watched this video.  These students are truly blessed to have Mr. Goodness working with them.  Fortunately, we are able to experience his great work through the lens of an iPad.

4th Annual Goody Triathlon

It's that time of year again!

Mr. Goodness, physical education teacher, organizes a 10K triathlon for special needs students throughout our area.  Over 150 students participated by swimming, biking, and running 6.2 miles!

It is my role to video the entire event and have a highlight video ready to view after lunch.  I use the iPad and iMovie as it is the EASIEST method for creating a video in such a short turn around!  After the race ends, the video needs to be ready in 30 minutes.  Not a problem with iMovie on the iPad!

I love this day, because students ALWAYS succeed when they think they can't.  Much of that is because of our many high school and middle school students and teachers who volunteer their time for encouragement!

Google Drive App and Google Spreadsheet To Document IEP Standard Progress

Mr. Goodness continues to utilize seamless integration with his iPad, the Google Drive app, and a Google Spreadsheet on his computer to document student progress.  View how the organization is allowing him to know the specific accomplishments and areas of work for each student.  In addition, all of this information is at his fingertips for parent viewing during IEP meetings.

U.S. History 1990 And Early 2000 iMovie Trailers

Mr. Krause recently invited me into his classroom to assist students in developing an iMovie trailer on the iPad.  The task was to create a movie trailer highlighting an assigned topic in U.S. History during the 1990's.

PURPOSE: Movie trailers are done to attract an audience to the film.  The movie trailer will be trying to do the same thing by attracting the audience to your topic by highlighting the important or interesting things about your topic.

View the actual documents of the project.  To create the documents to be viewed, I inserted the pictures into   a Google Drive folder, changed the viewing access to "anyone with a link".  I then copied the link to the statement above.

Large Group Instruction Area Digital Set Up Instructions Using Haiku Deck

Providing instructions to staff on how to complete digital products or processes is a major aspect of a #techcoach s job.  Our school recently updated the digital (computer/DVD/VCR) projection options in two of our Large Group Instruction (LGI) areas.

Haiku Deck became the go-to tool as it limits the words placed on a "slide" and the pictures are stunning.  Along with the Haiku Deck app, I incorporated the Skitch app as it allowed for new pictures to be enhanced by "notice markers", text, and arrows.

Explain Everything Audio and Visual For Junior Papers

Mrs. Denk, high school English teacher, wanted an iPad app for students to present their papers.  In the past, students stood in front of their peers and read their papers.  This year, they are going to read their paper, but they are also adding imagery and audio while reading the paper.  Explain Everything was the perfect tool for this application.

3rd Annual Goody Challenge

Today's Goody Challenge combined everything that is good about our school!

From a technical side of it, the iPad and iMovie served as a great tool to put together a video in less than thirty minutes that all participants could see.  Having the video cap the day off was a great way for students and adults to relive the incredible accomplishments of the day!

8th Grade Scheduling Open House

While parents & students waited for our annual 8th grade scheduling open house we decided to show "What's Happening At Pulaski High School?" The movie was created entirely on the iPad with the iPad Camera, Skitch, and iMovie.

While it was a great method for showcasing the great happenings at our school, it was also an opportunity to capture all the events that take place in one hour at Pulaski High School.



While the 2 1/2 hour event took place, parents were able to ask teachers about electives and the differences in courses offered next year.  The entire movie was created on the iPad.  See how the evening progressed!

Book Reports iPad Style

Hearing that "Book Reports" or "Book Reviews" from students to a class and or a teacher, provided inspiration for thinking about iPad apps that could be great support for a book review.

Reading books is still an important part of a student's learning process.  Use these seven options for students reviewing books.  Many of these options allow for students to produce a product to the camera roll.  Sharing it is as easy as sending it to the students' Google Drive.  See the presentation.

Coach My Video & Physical Education

This might be the BIGGEST SUCCESS story of my two year involvement with iPad use.  Our physical education teacher met with me for a total of about two hours.  During those meetings, we discussed video taping students in physical education class to demonstrate proper fundamentals.  In the past, the teacher would review the videos and try to verbally apply that to the next class period.

With the use of CoachMyVideo and the iPad, today he showed the students directly on the iPad the movement of the students, added lines, and talked about correct fundamentals for jump roping.

The success comes in that for three years the student progressed minimally.  After ten minutes of the student being video taped and correcting the jump rope movement, the student HAS successfully mastered jump roping.

The iPad, the video, the instructor, & CoachMyVideo led to immediate gains of success!

FACS Infomercial Using iPad iMovie

It may be just my belief, but the specialist areas of our educational system get over looked to a degree.  It was with this that I approached our Family and Consumer Science (FACS) teachers Mrs. Moehr & Miss Martens  back in September about creating a YouTube channel with videos of students cooking.  Not quite like the Food Network, but similar in fashion.

Our first attempt came to reality over the last three days.

Day 1 provided a short description of video tips presented to the student by me.  Examples included where the camera app exists on the iPad, rule of thirds, where the mic was on the iPad, how to delete a clip that is not wanted, and making the video clips short, concise, and to the point. During Day 1 students asked myself and the classroom teacher trouble shooting questions.  One important aspect of this was that the FASC teacher created a iMovie on the iPad prior to students creating their project.

Day 2 was more video taping, but not with me present in the classroom.  The FACS teacher was totally in charge of any iPad video trouble shooting.  I was available by email for support.

Day 3 consisted of a short iMovie tutorial by myself.  On of the great realizations is that throughout the school many of these students had created a video project with iMovie prior to this class.  FANTASTIC!  Now there were many additional student experts in the class along with the FACS teacher and myself.  We also demonstrated to the students the publishing process and sharing the final product with the teacher via Google Drive on the iPad.

Day 4 will be today, and I will not be in the classroom.  The FACS teachers will be the content teacher and the technology teacher.  They will have support through email and a "check in" by me at some point.

I really appreciate the FACS teacher's willingness to try something new despite only six iPads and no prior iMovie experience.

iMovie To Document Hunger Banquet

Something exciting happened today.  Students who had multiple experiences using the iPads to record video footage while using iMovie recorded a Hunger Banquet that was occurring with a group of students.  Not only were the students using the technology without any instructions, the teachers thought about and planned for the students to record the event.

Thank you to Mrs. Stainton and Mrs. Brylski for providing a real, thought provoking, learning experience.

Vernier Video Physic App In Action With Students

Today, was the culmination of a few hours of prep work with and without the physics teacher, Steve Blackford.  I completely taught the Video Physics app during first hour while the content teacher focused on the objectives of the lab.  The classroom teacher and I took more of a team teaching approach during second hour.  During the third hour, I was present in the classroom to simply provide support and to answer any tech questions that may arise (there were very few) during the content teachers complete explanation of the lab and the tech tool being used.  For the rest of the day, the content teacher is teaching both the lab and the tech tool features that will be implemented to fulfill the lesson objectives.  If he does have any questions, he can always review the video tutorial that was made for him.

I believe that having gradual release of the tech tool responsibility to the classroom teacher is truly the best way to support implementation of tech tool into the content area. Combine that with discussions with the content teacher to determine the best tool prior to the lesson and students are receiving quality, efficient instruction.
