Padlet Used For Presentations and Discussion

Padlet is not a new tool, however, I utilized it as a new tool to present.  I did not have any formal "presentation", instead I utilized the wall feature of Padlet to create options for session two teachers of my Resonate: Making Better Presentations.  Session One was all about emphasizing visual and delivery of presentations.  After learning about these keys, teachers spent one month creating and revising better presentations.

Session Two was about choice, sharing an old presentation, sharing a new presentation, and then providing words of wisdom.  The first three choice columns contained resources that were text, video, and images.  Teachers liked and/or commented on the resource.  Teachers then uploaded images or complete presentations that were "bad" and then presentations that were "good".  They discussed the negatives and positives of each of their presentations.  Finally, teachers were able to provide "words of wisdom" for anyone making presentations based on what they learned in the two hour session.

Padlet allowed me to do all of that with it's collaborative features!  Link to Padlet

*Once class was over, I changed the permissions so that the Padlet was "read only".

Apple Core - Resonate: Ignite Passion Through Better Presentations

I have studied Nancy Duarte's work and read a number of her books.
I love what she talks about.  As an educator, I have been on a quest to inform and challenge teachers to create better presentations since 2013.

I was blessed with the opportunity to teach sixteen teachers from our district on elements of better presentations.
  • The Reason For Better Presentations (Slide 7)
  • The Glance Test (Slide 11)
  • The Delivery (Slide 36)
  • The Goal (Slide 54)

Within the presentation, teachers were asked to perform a "Glance Test" and "Delivery" evaluation of past presentations.  The top of the document has been reduced from an original by Nancy Duarte to one that teachers can use.  I also added a checklist for evaluating the delivery portion of a speech.

I also incorporated Flipgrid to gain feedback from teachers after the session.  Teachers were asked to choose either the "Glance Test" or the "Delivery" to reflect on and then the "Goal".  The goal of creating three presentation throughout the year that incorporate the "Best Of" everything that we talked about is the expectation.

We will be meeting again in one month to see an "old presentation" and how the "new presentation incorporates many of the ideas discussed during Resonate: Ignite Passion Through Better Presentations.

Canvas Analytics

Last night, I conducted my first Apple Core session on Canvas Analytics.  I focused on two areas.

  • Course Analytics
  • Quiz (Test) Analytics
I truly believe the analytics from both sections can help with conversations as to why a student is or is not successful in the course.

Google Images + Google Drawing + Lucid Press = Publishing Options and Success

On Monday, we have one of the best days in our school year pertaining to professional development.  I am part of a group of teachers from our district that are willing to teach other teachers in our district trending innovative teaching strategies that include emerging technology tools.  All of our teachers get to choose three different tech sectionals throughout the day.  We also have lunch and "a sandbox" running opposite each other for emerging tech gadgets.

My first presentation for the day is an overview of the great iPad creation app, Explain Everything.  I have presented this before during the first semester Apple Core trainings, but all of the attendees are new to the details of this tool.

My second presentation is an "first time" presentation of Google Images, Google Draw, and Lucid Press.  Our district is on the verge of moving away from the Microsoft products for teachers.  Our students haven't had Microsoft for three years.  I really like the SlideCarnival template that I used. It is my intent to show new creation options for teachers to create "Microsoft Publisher" type products.  Some items that I focused on:
Google Images:
  • Size
  • Color
  • Type
  • Time
  • Usage Rights
Google Drawing:
  • Integrating With
    • Docs
    • Sheets
    • Slides
  • Layering
  • Tools
  • How To Connect To Google Drive
  • Creating
  • Templates
  • Tools
  • Publishing

Apple Core

It's been announced that we will have an "Apple Core" training team in our school district for the first time staring this school year.  Twelve people working toward teaching other staff members in our district specific technology skills to enhance student learning.

Apple Core Technology Training Team

Engage, enhance and accelerate learning for all students with the iPad.

To accomplish our mission, your role would be to

  • Become experts in using iPads for student collaboration, creation, critical thinking, content consumption, digital citizenship
  • Assist staff in being effective users of iPads both personally and professionally as outlined above.
  • Help build confidence of staff in using and integrating iPad apps and content with all curriculum through instructional coaching,  training, conversations and positive attitudes.
  • Research and share best practices with technology integration and bring innovative ideas to the training team and all district staff
  • Assist in training staff, specifically those whose classroom would see an increase of devices each year

Being a member of an innovative group of people will continue to challenge and stretch me so that I can learn and instruct all at the same time.  As a member of the 2013 Apple Distinguished Educator class, I'm reminded of the saying on our shirts.

"To educate, I innovate."

I believe this group will be the essence of the same people that are ADEs.  How awesome will that be!

Some of our specific tasks include.

Apple Core Team Tasks
Training
  • Train PCSD staff in iPad content and websites including but not limited to
    • District Apps
    • iTunes U
    • Integration with GAFE
    • Learning Management Program
  • Train staff on effective ways to integrate technology/personalize learning using the frameworks of SAMR model and 4 C’s.

Planning

  • Participate in planning around the implementation of the Pulaski Digital Learning Plan
  • Participate in the planning of professional development for professional staff

With this plan, our entire school district will move forward.  I look forward to the challenges that this responsibility provides.

Let's go!
