Collaboration With Arcadia SD, New London SD, Ashland SD To Make The Best Pet Food
With the help of Mr. Santy, Small Vets Instructor, we embarked on a collaborative learning experience that is unlike anything we have attempted before at Pulaski High School.
With our Bright Bytes surveys from 2016-2017, students revealed to us that "collaborating with others outside of our school district" was something we "never did".
With this data, I decided to make it a goal to decrease the "never" and increase the "every few months" as a starting point for content areas at Pulaski High School. I approached Mr. Santy about the idea to collaborate with students in another school district. He immediately thought of the small vet learning opportunity for creating a pet food. I was able to provide a tutorial on the publishing tool as students will produce a website that will market their product.
I also provided a tutorial on the features of Google Hangout.
I'm thankful that Mr. Santy was willing to attempt the creation of a new pet food with students outside of our school district. To me, this makes sense. Learning from people more than one mile away is something that happens in so many businesses on a daily basis.
The details of the learning experience for students was well thought out by Mr. Santy, and the email communication with teachers allowed emails to be exchanged among instructors. A spreadsheet was used to "match" students with other districts.
I'm also thankful to Ms. Caelwarts, Ms. Kurowski, and Mrs. Uelmen for allowing the "Google Hangouts" to be opened for our two week period. Without an "informational and instructional" technology team that has visions of innovative learning, none of this would happen.

High School and Elementary Students Collaborating On A Menu
Students from one of our elementary schools have been helping our Culinary 2 students design new menus. Providing healthy foods that elementary students have interest in will promote healthy eating habits.
We were thrilled to use Google Hangouts as a quick and easy tool for collaborating during this learning experience.

Success Is Messy: Nearpod Works To Perfection
Yesterday, I was reminded of how successful things happen. Mr. Anderson attended a PLC day at Adlai Stevenson High School and noticed that the presenter engaged the audience with PearDeck. Unfortunately, PearDeck comes with a price we are unable to pay.
When Mr. Anderson approached me about the concept, I initially thought that the presentation tool of questions in Google Slides would be an adequate solution. We found this could be a tool, but being a single teacher in a classroom proved a little challenging to monitor those questions. A teacher needs to toggle back and forth between the presentation and the question/answer window.
As we were talking, Nearpod came to my mind. It quickly became clear that this was the perfect tool that would serve his Anatomy students in their learning experience.
- Upload a presentation from Powerpoint or Google Slides
- Upload images or PDFs
- Once a presentation is uploaded, add "activity cards", "polls", or "questions"
- No sign up required by the students. Simply display the code that they enter into the Nearpod app. Quick, Simple!
- Teacher begins to present. Immediately the presentation shows up on a student's device.
- When it's time for an activity or question, students interact on their iPad by writing, drawing, typing, highlighting
- Students share their creation back to the teacher
- Teacher discusses some responses by the students
Lectures are not always necessary, however when they are the correct delivery for the content, Nearpod became a great tool for our this teacher.
In a 30 minute discussion, Mr. Anderson and I did exactly what the right arrow above states. We went around in circles, backwards at times, but eventually found the tool that serves him best for his content area at this time.
After his experience during the day, Mr. Anderson introduced the tool to his Biology team. Teachers learning and then teaching teachers! It was a great learning experience.

PHS Autos - Building A Library of Skills
Students are starting to creating their video library of skills using images, video, and voice over. Essentially, students are critically thinking about the steps to accomplish a task (in this case it was a brake job), creatively thinking about the content and how they want their video to be viewed, and sharing it to the world!
We really want students to choose the tool that they want to create with based on what they think their skills.

"Walking In Students' Shoes" Google Expedition & Virtual Reality
Some of our English students related a story in which the theme was empathy and "walking in another person's shoes" by experiencing life as a refuge.
Students were fascinated on the amount of challenges that refugee students experienced in their daily educational life. Google Expeditions were a perfect tool for our students to experience "traveling" to another part of the globe without leaving Pulaski High School.
It was fantastic seeing high school students engaged and immersed into their educational environment.

Using an LMS in Flex Mod
We believe at Pulaski High School that a Flex Mod schedule is the best schedule for students. In the last two weeks we have had Liberal High School in Kansas and SPASH in Stevens Point visit us to see how our schedule works.
We are in year three and believe and LMS (learning management system) is essential for students and staff to maximize classroom and personal learning time (PLT) for a positive learning experience.
Below is the presentation that outlines some major ways we utilize our lms, Canvas. No matter what lms is used, a "one stop shop" for course resources is essential for success.
I created the presentation in Keynote and exported it to YouTube.

Stick Around App For High School Psychology Students Teaching Third Graders About The Brain
Students in Mr. Krause's Psychology class created literature paper books to teach third graders about the brain. From those books, students created interactive puzzles using the Stick Around app that will be an interactive learning game following the reading of the book.
Students were collaborating with a partner to critically think about how the book could be made into an interactive puzzle. Once those determinations were set, they created an inner and outer brain puzzle complete with images, text, and definitions.
This is all based on our district's mission and vision.
The Stick Around app was the PERFECT app for this learning activity!

Podcast: Play in new window | Subscribe: iTunes
In this episode, Mrs. Lindsey Schartner, Pulaski High Social Studies Teacher, tells us that she was in seventh grade in the Pulaski Community School District when she realized teaching was going to be her career. Mrs. Barszcz had her students write and draw books about what students wanted to be when they grew up. Mrs. Schartner chose a teacher.
As with many of our district employees, the people are the best part about working in the Pulaski Community School District.
She would choose to be a physical education teacher for one reason.
Golfing every week is something she loves to do. She would also like to travel to Europe.
Why Are We Creating Podcasts?
Our AP Environmental Science teacher will be listening to and creating podcasts in May 2017 based on an item of interest. I needed to understand the workflow and found a purpose: introducing our great staff to the world! Discover the details!

- Time
- Event
A timeline that graphically represents related items or events in a sequential order and displayed along a line can be another method for students to "show what they know".
Exporting Options are as a JPG or as a PDF. Collaboration is also possible as a "file" type .RWT can be emailed or Airdropped so that students can add their portions to the group timeline.

Book Creator App: End of Unit, End of Year, Projects, Endless Possibilities
A few students and teachers in our school have dabbled in creating with the tremendously popular Book Creator App. Currently, our Civics students are experiencing our school's first full implemented Book Creator App learning opportunity.
The Civics instructors created templates to assist students with the gathering and publishing of information. With the great features of "open in" and "combining books", both found on the iPad, the workflow was efficient.
Finally, students collaborated with their group to create a final product which was published to Canvas for easy evaluation.
The templates were placed on Canvas and students easily "opened" them in Book Creator to add their information!

I've blogged about Workflow before, but until Apple made it free last week, I didn't really feel it was a tool that others would pay $2.99 for. Why? Because it takes a little bit to understand it.

- Geography: "The Art of Yangzhou" - culture, museum, poetry
- ELL: "Field Trip to Hispanic Historic Sites in the U.S." - relating to people in our school
- Spanish: " Field Trip to Spain" - See the places speaking the language
- Math: "Nasa's Modern Figures" - STEM in the world
- Social Studies: "World War I" - Visit recreated trench system
- Business: "Girls Power to Beat Poverty in Bangladesh" - beginning own business
- Chemistry: "Hydrogen Burning" - Inside a burning hydrogen reaction and explanation
- Autos: "Subaru of Indiana Automotive" - Inside a "zero waste plant"
- Speech: Students lead tours with other students in class to practice public speaking skills
Currently there are roughly 600 expeditions! Plenty of opportunities for use!
Things that I was impressed with while leading a group through Expeditions:
- Teacher as the leader
- Direct students to the exact places you want them to go
- Read word for word information on each item in the expedition
- See exactly where every "follower" is on your tour
Things that I was impressed with while following a leader during an Expedition:
- Student as follower
- With an arrow, I was directed toward the site of the information being explained by the leader
- Amazing real images
- Felt like I was there
Since we do not have viewers for every student in the class, we have shown students how to use their iPad to experience the expedition. For high school students, I think the iPad isn't as good as a viewer, but good enough to experience the images and information.
I really like the "List of Available Expeditions" that someone created. Combined with the free lesson plan presentations, and these really are a special experience for students who may never get there in reality.

Podcast: Play in new window | Subscribe: iTunes
In this episode, Mrs. Jackie Salewski, Pulaski High School Secretary, says "bring it on" when it comes to answering these questions! She has known since her Coleman High School days that she had a passion for this type of work! She loves the relationships she has built with Pulaski Community families and is the main reason why she loves her job! She has no other aspirations to work anywhere else. This is her "dream job".
She's a digital scrap booker and wants to see Alaska soon!
Why Are We Creating Podcasts?
Our AP Environmental Science teacher will be listening to and creating podcasts in May 2017 based on an item of interest. I needed to understand the workflow and found a purpose: introducing our great staff to the world! Discover the details!

Digital Story Project: Spanish II using Explain Everything as a Template
In collaborating with the Spanish II team of Mrs. Van Gheem-Rottier, Ms. Sampson, and Ms. Slasarek, we developed a digital workflow in which students will be creating written stories based on a template created in Explain Everything.
This stemmed from the template that Mrs. Vertz created. She wanted students to focus the majority of their time on working through the process and not creating all of the pieces needed in the process.
Explain Everything's "export a project" option allows for "guided creativity" from teacher to student.
In this project, Spanish II students will be showcasing their creativity and language using the Spanish language by creating a digital legend. Their goal is to use the "preterite and imperfect tense" to create a story about the characters, setting, and plot of their choice. Only text will be used - no audio.
Read about the entire process and view the "digital workflow" in the images below.
The template that students will "open in" Explain Everything on their iPad has been exported as a project from Explain Everything to Google Drive by the instructors. Our teachers utilize Canvas to disseminate resources.

Lunch N' Learn: PODCASTS: Consuming To Creating and How to Get There
Because of a recent conversation with our AP Environmental Science teacher, I determined an iPad only workflow for consuming podcasts and creating content through a podcast. Some may say that "we don't have time for that". While time needs to managed appropriately, this is a great tool for reflection on content or passions that are present in the content area. In addition, this could be a "quarter project" ideas as once the process is taught for the first time, students will be able to create the podcast(s) on their own and publish.
This really doesn't need to be an hour production. Three to ten minutes with one or no guests can really spark creativity, thinking and discussion.
UPDATE: [June 2, 2017] Students really did a great job, and had fun doing it! They created unique "entry music" to their podcasts along with rich content.
Some of them can be found HERE.
All of them can be found HERE if the permissions are correct.
Listen to the Raider Strong Podcast.
Find a podcast using the podcast app found on iPads.

Create a podcast using Garage Band
Create art work for the podcast using the Canva app
Publish it using the "sharrow" to Soundcloud
Write a "show page"
