Classroom 2.0 by Apple - Lunch N' Learn

With the flex-mod schedule and multiple "mod" class configurations, it's taken us a few months to accurately set up teacher schedules in the Classroom app.

I look forward to sharing this powerful learning tool with our teachers!

High School Creative Learning Environment

Mr. Rodal decided that over Christmas break he was going to remove 19 desks.  Not all the desks, just some of them.  Group, collaborative work happens every day in his classroom.  The desks were taking up a great deal of space and required constant arranging and rearranging.

He fixed this.

He removed 19 desks from his classroom.

We are documenting his classroom experiences with candid responses from both students and teachers.  Let's hear from the teacher, first!

Impact On Students:
Creativity:  Students are able to create their own learning spaces.  They are not confined to a desk.  They must also decide how to utilize the large white boards that are now in the room.
Collaboration: Removing INDIVIDUAL desks has eliminated INDIVIDUAL borders.  Gathering in learning groups is efficient.

Chromebook First Day With Students Set Up

Mrs. Schmidt is in her second year of implementing Chromebooks on a "as needed basis".  That means, she has Chromebooks present in her classroom whenever she needs them.  More importantly, whenever the students need them.

View how she efficiently guided her students to log in for the first time and set up their web browsing experience.

Classroom Spaces Mr. Mihalski

Yesterday, I helped Mr. Mihaski, high school mathematics teacher, created a slightly different classroom space.  He is allowing students to be the resource for discussion of problems in his class.  To facilitate this, he created a "station" in the classroom that has a document camera.  Students will be asked to explain their work while students add constructive conversation to the class. Mr. Mihalski will focus on questioning of the student as to why they completed a step in a math problem.  This will also place the emphasis on explanation by the student which will help with Common Core skills.

This Is How We Do It!

Today our school district created a professional development day that was conducted entirely in house.  Twenty-six different staff members developed a lesson for staff that was based on something they feel passionate about relating to technology.

Our idea was to teach staff how we would teach students.  Conducting a lesson plan complete with integrating technology while learning content.  Our content needed to be fun.  We chose bathroom etiquette.  It was well received.

Our entire lesson was really a Lesson About Nothing. (We created a blog specifically for all the resources that we used, and the Simple Mind creations of the teachers)  However, we incorporated a number of tech tools.
Non tech tools included an introduction to our collaborative white board areas.

Teachers laughed, struggled, and engaged their way through the lesson and discovered the possibilities of truly integrating technology into a classroom setting.

Setting The Message In (Virtual) Stone

Hello!
While I am impartial to iPads, I realize that many digital devices will make my following point!  Having verbal guidance from a teacher is one thing (an effective thing), having visually appealing pictures, written language, or video substance can make or break a student's ability to succeed.

Since we have iPads and every student has digital access during school AND after school, I decided to place all three lessons (Algebra, PreAlgebra, Social Studies) in written form and visual form on our classroom blog.  I am finding that many students struggle with following directions!  In the past, students may only hear the instructions while in class or receive the instructions on paper (but subsequently lose the paper).  Placing instructions on the web, allows for the content to be relatively "written in stone".

Digital Tools Used By Instructor OR Students During The Three Lessons

Without a digital device, iPads!, this would not be possible.

Become a student and see what they saw, read what they read, and view what they viewed.

Direct Instruction To Group Work

This activity didn't really require much from the iPad, but the whole "rethinking the learning environment" has come about because of iPads.

Today, we needed to get some direct facts to the student, but certainly didn't want to have an entire class period of "sit and get".  So we came up with the below activity.

Digital Setup Classroom 2011-2012

Today's project was to set up my digital area for projection to my direct instruction group. I truly am blessed to have all of the tools. It will allow for seamless integration with student's work and items that I need them to see. (Video was taken with my iPad2)

Learning Environments - Extremely Excited!

With the help of my team teacher, our in-classroom learning environments have initially been created.

Two Different Small Group Areas - (Chalkboard to Whiteboard)
Paper on Bulletin Board - Idea Centers!
Both areas accommodate students and an instructor (student or adult) and can
be combined to teach a group of 8-10 - (Versatility)

Our Direct Instructional Area...

Our Resource Area and Small Group Opportunity (chalkboard changed to whiteboard)

Our coffee area (no coffee really) - I think this will be a popular destination for students.

A view to the SMARTboard from the coffee area.

Getting There

The boxes are unpacked.  Now it is time to focus on learning environments within my room!

Classroom Creation

As of 9:30 A.M. this morning, KI (a company that creates classroom furniture in the Green Bay area) delivered five sample items that can be used by our students for the coming school year. I have preliminary set up a number of different learning environments that can be utilized by the students. By no means is this a final set up.

I do have to thank the great people at KI for giving us the opportunity to have some much needed modern equipment.

Day Before The Transformation

These are pictures from my room today.  A very large thank you to our custodial staff for moving all of my classroom supplies.  Tomorrow the transformation begins with a great announcement.
