From Subject Line To Signature: Emailing Correctly in a Professional Educational Setting

As we are in our second full month of the flex mod schedule, students continue to communicate with teachers on a variety of topics.  From missing assignments to acquiring resources, students must provide proper, professional emails.

On Thursday, our homeroom will focus on teaching students the proper way to email teachers to get fast, productive results.

The presentation provides a great video from Forbes magazine on proper business emailing techniques and a specific example of an email conversation between a student and a teacher.  Combined with discussion questions and after participating in this educational setting, students will know the correct aspects of properly writing an email to their teacher.

The motivation for this presentation can be found here.
The presentation template can be found at Slides Carnival.

Our specialist PBIS recorder, Mrs. Mittag, has been trying to send emails once a week to seventeen other teachers.  She tries to send the email at the same time every week, but with hectic schedules it may not always happen.

Enter IFTTT (If This Then That)

We have used IFTTT for emails to text.  IFTTT can work for so many things, see explanation!

Semester Exam Study Tools

Last year, I provided a long list of study exam tools that teachers could present to students to prepare for for semester exam.  This year during Lunch N' Learn, I am focusing on three tools that, in my opinion, are the best of the list.

Impact On Students:
Semester exams are a debatable topic.  Whether your school or individual teachers administers them is not something I want to debate.  However, if the exams exist, lets help students study by offering them quality tools.
Collaboration:  All of the tools can provide collaboration opportunities.  Thinking, processing, questioning together can help remember concepts.
Critical Thinking: Once concepts are presented to students through one of these tools, students can critically determine the right area to obtain the answer and decipher the best answer to remember for the exam.

Personalize & Unpersonalize iPads All In Same Class Period

ATTENTION!  This will be helpful if you have a class set of iPads and multiple students using the iPads in a day!

Many apps are limited in that they need an iPad to be personalized with an email account in order to export through email.  The same holds true for Twitter.

Our students are brilliant! They determined a way that we can do this even though multiple users use the iPad each day.  See how they do it!

Students Thinking Before "School"

I utilize every minute I can.  Today, I asked the students two questions in an email.  The students responded before the actual bell that starts our day.  They even seemed happy about it.  The questions were the following.
(some responses will be in a coming video)

  1. How has technology changed the way you learn?
  2. What do you most enjoy about the technology in our classroom?
