WIX Website Building For Spanish Students

Mrs. Titler and Ms. Slusarek, PHS Spanish teachers, asked a few weeks ago about website building tools for students to "Show What They Know".  Besides Google Sites, WIX was a suggestion I provided as it is an easy drag and drop tool to build a website.

A guest blog post is below along with student examples.

The students just completed a project where they had to make a web page giving advice and suggestions to people who want to be come different types of professions. The students worked with a partner, picked a profession and created the webpage with information such as typical day, salary, description of job duties and characteristics of a good worker. They did a great job, but I especially liked the projects that used WIX. This was a new web building tool for me and I was very pleased with how the website looked. The students said that it was easy to use, but that they needed a lot of information to fill it up. I included some examples here for you to see. There are some errors, but the overall presentation is what I wanted to share with you. Thank you for the suggestion!

Chrome Audio Icon

So many times audio is leaving the speakers of our school computers.  Many times sites will "auto play" audio and you may not know what tab the audio is coming from!

Chrome Web Browsers have AUDIO ICONS that will appear on the tab that audio is playing on.

The image below has an AUDIO ICON toward the right of the tab.  The icon ONLY plays when audio is coming from a resource on that tab.

Mystery Solved.

Twitter Failure Produced TodaysMeet Success

Back in October 2012, Mr. Seamandel wanted to use Twitter with his ninth grade students as a means for communicating about writing.

Many problems occurred:

  • Couldn't log in on iPad consistently
  • Couldn't log out on iPad consistently
  • Couldn't adjust profile
  • Students really didn't understand (at that time) how Twitter worked
  • Couldn't access computers consistently to accommodate the learning environment
From that stemmed a great trial of a technology tool, todaysmeet.com , that created an incredible learning environment.

A room was set up for students to create and comment on Haiku poems that were created by students.  As Mr. Seamandel states,

First we did a basic exercise to ensure that students knew how it (Todaysmeet) worked.  Then, I had them write a haiku alone, or with a friend.   It had to fit the standard conventions of a haiku -- 5-7-5 and relating to nature. (Some students became stuck, and I allowed them to write about whatever they could think of.)  This worked out great because no student was really willing to read or share what they had written, but jumped at the opportunity to post it online and have peers read it as it popped up on the board.  Ended up being a great exercise and a way to showcase writing/poetry without tying a name to it!

While the room that was created for this has expired, a great feature of todaysmeet.com, the opportunity to use a technology tool to engage students in poetry was outstanding!

Google Chrome's Three Little Lines

Google Chrome is a wonderful tool to surf the web, especially if your school uses Google Apps For Education.

Our school district does!

Therefore learning about what's behind "Three Little Lines" can help you become more efficient by utilizing tools that aide in completing tasks!

Normally, I like to create video tutorials that last two to three minutes.  This one lasted slightly over six minutes, but is well worth the view to learn all that the "three little lines" offer!

In addition, Google provides a Choose Your Account option.  Consider this if you would share a "non public" computer with your family or have multiple Google accounts (one professional, one personal) that you you want simultaneous access to during the day.

VINE Explains StatSilk - Interactive Maps of Open Data

StatSilk was learned about through @rmbryne Free Tech For Teachers.  I immediately sent this to our high school social studies and stats teachers.
I also used VINE to create a six second video clip of the features of StatSilk.
