Teaching Teachers Who Will Experience 1:1 iPad in 2012

Today, I had the privilege of teaching a high school staff about tech tools that I have used in my iPad filled classroom.  Next year, the high school students will be using an iPad on a daily basis.  The iPad will be theirs to use during the school year.

This school did the correct thing by getting the iPads into the hands of the teachers well before they are asked to lead students with them.  Teachers have had the iPads for about 2 months.

The presentation that I used is below.  Highlights are listed below the presentation.

Some highlights:

  • Tips and Tricks: Slide 4
  • Knowing 21st Century Students: Slide 6
  • 21st Century Educational Settings: Slide 15
  • Classroom Setup: Slide 20
  • Finding Apps: Slide 31
  • Being App Literate: Slide 38
  • My App List: Slide 40
  • Lesson Integrating Technology With Students: Slide 48
  • Lesson Integrating Technology With Adults: Slide 49
  • Lists of Apps: Slide 50 to Slide 55
  • Digital Citizenship: Slide 66
It truly was a great experience.  I really enjoy teaching adults about iPad/technology/21st century classroom techniques so that they can implement techniques with their students.

Awesome!

Setting The Message In (Virtual) Stone

Hello!
While I am impartial to iPads, I realize that many digital devices will make my following point!  Having verbal guidance from a teacher is one thing (an effective thing), having visually appealing pictures, written language, or video substance can make or break a student's ability to succeed.

Since we have iPads and every student has digital access during school AND after school, I decided to place all three lessons (Algebra, PreAlgebra, Social Studies) in written form and visual form on our classroom blog.  I am finding that many students struggle with following directions!  In the past, students may only hear the instructions while in class or receive the instructions on paper (but subsequently lose the paper).  Placing instructions on the web, allows for the content to be relatively "written in stone".

Digital Tools Used By Instructor OR Students During The Three Lessons

Without a digital device, iPads!, this would not be possible.

Become a student and see what they saw, read what they read, and view what they viewed.

Equipment Arrival

The day has come...the iPads and Cart have arrived.  Barely out of the box, the process of inventorying them starts!

While the cart does cost a bit and we brainstormed about ideas to store carts while not buying the cart, now that it is here...I am glad the school district decided this is the route we will go.

Additional Equipment: Google Apps For Education

I am thrilled that the pilot of Google Apps has been a success and will be implemented district wide next year.  (We will be requiring all staff to use GMAIL and CALENDAR - NO Outlook) I have been fortunate to be a part of that pilot and have used multiple Google tools with students and for myself.  With that being said, the iPad 2 will be extremely friendly toward the use of Google tools.

Google Apps that I will be using with students in 2011-2012 as of March 29, 2011

Equipment: Apps List

Maybe this book will help? Get Book

Creating List of Apps For Purchase ($250 limit - consider VPP)I believe this app list will be changing until the absolute last day before needing them deployed on the machines for the start of the school year. In my estimation about eight paid apps averaging $0.99 per app for 30 machines will take the entire $250 budget. Of course, if an app is more than
$0.99 than a smaller amount of apps will be able to be purchased. $250 really doesn't go that far
when the VPP takes affect. I do understand the reason for the VPP as apps are not created for
free. Managing the $250 for paid apps I believe will be the most challenging part of the 1:1 year.

BY NO MEANS is this a FINALIZED list, but I will be adding to it as I find apps that may be of use in my classroom. It is really going to be difficult to pair this down. I do believe that I will develop a rubric to determine the overall ranking of the apps before purchase.
